The Consumer Health Products Association (CHPA) is the leading voice fighting to ensure that Americans have access to over-the-counter (OTC) medications, dietary supplements, and consumer medical devices.  CHPA is seeking a Senior Manager of Communications & Media Relations to lead its dietary supplements communications strategy and support CHPA’s overall consumer healthcare communications.  This opportunity is located at CHPA’s headquarters in Washington, DC, and offers a hybrid work environment (three days of telecommuting per week).  CHPA offers competitive compensation and benefits, flexible scheduling and time-off options, and opportunities to grow and develop professionally.  As a prospective and/or new employee, you will be required to comply with the company’s vaccination protocol.

 

Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President of Communications & Public Affairs, the Senior Manager of Communications & Media Relations is a key member of CHPA’s Communications Department and works closely, collaboratively, and in accordance with the overall media relations leadership of CHPA’s Director of Communications & Media Relations.  The Senior Manager helps serve the communications needs in the consumer healthcare space with a particular focus on supporting our dietary supplements and nutrition science team led by the Senior Vice President of Scientific Affairs and Dietary Supplements.  The Senior Manager is a part of CHPA’s cross-functional team that includes Regulatory & Scientific Affairs, Government Affairs, Communications, Operations, and the President’s Office.  This position serves as a communications subject-matter expert, thought-partner, and media liaison.

The Senior Manager provides communications support for a variety of strategic priorities, programs, and content (internally and externally), including developing and advancing content (often scientific and technical in nature) to influence consumer healthcare policy.  This position coordinates the placement and posting of content and provides communications-related support to staff and CHPA’s member companies.

The Senior Manager will take a relationship-based approach when working with a variety of key stakeholders and thought partners, including CHPA staff and its member companies; external audiences in the consumer healthcare space; and third-party organizations, media, policy makers, opinion leaders, PR agencies, and consumers.  The Senior Manager assists the Director in vetting media opportunities and helping to manage CHPA’s response to news, events, issues, and crises as they arise.  This position does not have direct reports.

 

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit a variety of editorial materials bound for public audiences, including press releases, statements, byline articles, op-eds, presentations, publications, blogs, educational collateral, etc.
  • Work across all media (traditional and social) to strategically communicate consumer healthcare messages.
  • Support media relations efforts in coordination with the Director, helping to identify proactive and reactive media opportunities and coordinate rapid responses to breaking news, events, issues, and crises as they arise.
    • Conduct nutrition and wellness media surveillance and analyze news stories for their relevance and content;
    • Maintain media lists and identify opportunities to foster relationships with reporters;
    • Develop scientific and medical writings for consumer and industry stakeholder use;
    • Coordinate technical and scientific positions and content development that advances the credibility of the dietary supplements category;
    • Support development of releases, media statements, and related social media;
    • Coordinate online newsroom and web copy updates, as needed;
    • Increase visibility of CHPA meetings/supplement educational events through media outreach.
  • Work with appropriate staff, member companies, and related organizations to develop positions, talking points, and press materials on issues of importance to industry.
  • Develop metrics and measurements to evaluate program success, reach, and impact.
  • Draft and build bi-weekly member newsletter featuring dietary supplement news and updates.
  • Organize and lead meetings for the Dietary Supplement Communications Subcommittee.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate information to a variety of audiences, internally and externally
  • Ability to create diverse content for a variety of audiences, including both highly technical and basic literacy levels
  • Ability to multitask, work well under pressure, balance competing priorities, and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a dynamic working environment

 

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, communications, or related field
  • Minimum of six years of communications/media relations
  • Experience developing content for all media, including broadcast, print, Internet, and radio
  • Experience in the healthcare sector or associations is preferred
