The position promotes Thermo Fisher Scientific by developing positive relationships with decision makers, members of Congress, government agency leaders and industry organizations. The ideal candidate will use their experience working as a congressional or agency staffer to advocate company positions across a broad portfolio of life sciences products and services.

This new position – which after the pandemic will be based at our Capitol Hill office – adds to a growing government relations team that has been transformed by the company’s global involvement in every aspect of COVID-19 response.

This person will represent the company’s capabilities and leadership on Capitol Hill and with the Executive Branch. The issues include diagnostic and medical device policies, biopharma supply chain and manufacturing, and research instrumentation.

Responsibilities:

  • Work as part of the Washington, DC, team to carry out the company’s government relations strategy;
  • Lobby members of Congress, their staff and government agencies;
  • Develop relationships and work effectively with both parties;
  • Grow relationships with agencies including BARDA, CDC, FDA, CMS and NIH;
  • Build relationships and advocate in a few select states, working with company site leaders and local stakeholders;
  • Organize and host elected officials, candidates or government VIPs at our U.S. sites;
  • Draft correspondence, talking points and background materials for use by executives and others on the government relations team;
  • Work with business & trade associations, industry groups and others to convey Thermo Fisher’s thought leadership and leverage them in support of our policy positions;
  • Work with retained lobbyists to meet objectives and goals;
  • Boost employee engagement with the Thermo Fisher Scientific PAC;
  • Work with other company leaders – including communications, corporate social responsibility and diversity & inclusion – on projects that grow Thermo Fisher’s reputation and demonstrate our positive impact on our communities;

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of progressive experience on Capitol Hill, with the executive branch, at a lobbying firm, association and/or company handling relevant issues;
  • Bipartisan and collaborative reputation on Capitol Hill, with relevant executive agencies and across relevant industries;
  • Bachelors or above education;
  • Personal attachment to our mission of enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer;
  • Aptitude for clear, concise written and verbal communications;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and confidently as part of a team and with government officials;
  • Self-directed and self-motivated to action;
  • 20% domestic travel may be necessary, after the pandemic;
