Job Description



Position Overview

As a Senior Manager, Government Affairs, you will focus on Invenergy’s Texas government affairs activities, primarily in the legislative and executive branch. This position will support the overall Government Affairs initiatives and report to the Vice President of Government Affairs-West. You will work collaboratively with members of all departments within the company. In addition, this position requires an ability to work constructively with trade organization leadership and staff, lobbyists, and peer companies. This position involves budgeting, preparing strategy documents, and weekly reporting in CRM.

  • Advocate on behalf of the company through strong relationships with elected officials in the state legislative and executive branches
  • Analyze legislation and coordinate with internal stakeholders to address problematic provisions
  • Anticipate legislative threats and opportunities and develop action plans to drive positive outcomes
  • Develop legislative solutions for issues negatively impacting company projects
  • Provide expert testimony to legislative committees
  • Spend significant time developing relationships with elected/appointed officials, departments, agencies, and staff in areas of key projects
  • Manage third-party consultants and lobbyists
  • Build industry coalitions in support of priorities, work constructively with trade organizations and peer companies
  • Develop and execute public affairs campaigns
  • Collaborate with Federal Affairs on project issues with a federal nexus
  • Participate in political fundraisers, meetings, and hearings
  • Prepare regular reports and briefings for internal stakeholders; collaborate with other department team members

Required Skills

  • 3-7+ years of lobbying or other relevant experience (State Legislative or Executive branch staff member)
  • 3-7+ years of electric industry related experience (utility, trade org, ISO, agency, etc.)
  • Must have a basic understanding of the bulk electric power system
  • Must have a fundamental and working understanding of ERCOT and the Texas Power Market
  • Working knowledge of water issues, natural gas, renewable energy technologies, and transmission
  • Proven leadership track record and relationships within State Government Agencies/Administration
  • Public relations or public affairs experience a plus
  • Ability to work across the aisle
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, comfortable in public speaking roles
  • Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to identify and solve problems
  • Proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint
  • Aptitude for learning management systems such as Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Oracle ERP
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive and proprietary information
  • Demonstrated exceptional customer service skills
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and re-prioritize assignments as needed
  • Proactive and motivated to deliver key business objectives
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team context
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with firm deadlines
  • Ability to travel during legislative time periods, and as needed during non-legislative time periods, often with little notice
