Job Description

Association Management Center seeks a Senior Manager of Health Policy & Government Relations to join our team. This role serves as the Director of Health Policy and Government Relations for our client, American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, AAHPM. The director will provide subject matter expertise and strategic input, coordinating with volunteers, staff, partners and coalitions. The director will also contribute to messages to volunteers, governmental agencies, partners, and the public to advance sound health policy for patients with serious illness, their families and caregivers, and the professionals who care for them. This work serves to raise AAHPM’s visibility as a leading expert in the care of serious illness among policymakers, payers, healthcare providers, associations, the media, and the public.

Role Responsibilities

  • Identify and examine health policy issues with the potential to impact members, their patients, and the field, and guide relevant committees and work groups in developing AAHPM’s policy priorities, positions, and public comments.
  • Assess opportunities to advance the Academy’s health policy agenda and make recommendations regarding AAHPM positions and action. Develop and execute advocacy strategies as appropriate.
  • Raise awareness among policymakers, health professionals, and the public regarding issues of concern for Hospice and Palliative Medicine, including through crafting of position statements and public comments submitted to legislative and regulatory bodies.
  • Build and manage relationships with volunteer leaders, consultants, and external partners in support of AAHPM’s policy goals; nurture strategic partnerships that amplify the Academy’s health policy efforts, including participation in coalitions, especially the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care and the Patient Quality of Life Coalition; collaborate with other hospice and palliative care interests, medical societies, and healthcare organizations; and support volunteers in their roles representing AAHPM on relevant external bodies, including the American Medical Association.
  • Advance members’ knowledge and understanding of key issues and relevant policy developments; highlight the Academy’s efforts to advocate on behalf of their patients and profession; strengthen members’ capacity for effective advocacy by providing timely information, training, and resources; and support grass roots advocacy efforts when appropriate by maintaining and promoting the AAHPM Legislative Action Center.
  • Manage special projects that align with AAHPM’s policy priorities and offer unique opportunities to support hospice and palliative care clinicians, expand access to high-quality care for patients with serious illness, and/or grow and sustain the field.

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred, preferably with a political science, public policy, or health policy emphasis.
  • Proficiency in written and oral communication.
  • Proficiency in multi-lateral collaboration.
  • 6 years’ experience in public policy-related role (government, government relations, or policy analysis) with increasing responsibility; prior working experience with medical associations, physician volunteers, and/or developing or managing advocacy programs considered a plus.
  • Technology: Microsoft Office, Voter’s Voice (grassroots legislative action platform), schedule polling software, Zoom
  • Travel: Expected about six times a year including Washington D.C. for critical advocacy activities, annual assembly, and AMA spring and fall meetings.
  • Physical: Sitting, Walking, Standing, Manual Dexterity, Hearing and Seeing.
