Who we are looking for:

 

ASCO is in search of a knowledgeable and skilled Senior Manager, Public Affairs & Advocacy Communications to provide high-level strategic communications and media relations for programs supported by the ASCO Public Affairs and Advocacy Communications unit in support of the Society’s mission, Strategic Plan, and goals of the MarCom department.

Remote candidates welcome or primary location in Alexandria, VA.

 

 

 

What you will do:

  • Direct overarching communications strategies in support of key ASCO strategic priorities and flagship programs, including Association for Clinical Oncology and ASCO Association PAC efforts.
  • Serve as management lead on high-priority policy and practice issues and efforts—including NIH/NCI/FDA funding, CMS/FDA regulation, ASCO’s Patient-Centered Cancer Care certification program and Oncology Medical Home standards, ASCO’s domestic and international QOPI Certification Program, and ASCO’s equity/diversity/inclusion initiatives , collaborating closely with content experts and overseeing the work of supporting staff.
  • Direct comprehensive multi-tiered strategies within MarCom’s integrated “Way of Working” framework for special high-priority initiatives to include paid and organic social media, member communications, media relations, advertising, analytics, branding/design, and email/direct marketing. Includes organizing and coordinating the work of the Core Team and development of MarCom briefs.
  • Direct efforts to establish and enhance relationships with key health policy media, including efforts related to facilitating reporter requests, drafting ASCO media statements, facilitating staff and ASCO leadership reviews of content, drafting talking points, preparing ASCO leadership for media interviews, researching/targeting/pitching reporters, writing news releases, planning and executing media events, conducting associated social media efforts, monitoring/evaluating media coverage, and generating results reports.
  • Direct advocacy communications strategies that help advance state-level policy/legislative priorities that have national implications.
  • Direct ASCO member communications on a wide range of Policy & Advocacy and Clinical Affairs department priorities, including identifying and developing content for the ASCO in Action feed, drafting articles for ASCO communications channels, writing social media content, developing member education products (AiA briefs, fact sheets, infographics, FAQs, videos, and content for asco.org pages) – working collaboratively across multiple ASCO departments, leading the planning and development process, and supervising outside vendors/consultants.
  • Oversee tracking the results for executed MarCom strategies and adjust strategies based on real-time outcomes from analyzed metrics.
  • Manage staff by providing direction and guidance, setting priorities, delegating appropriately, communicating effectively, facilitating knowledge sharing, setting goals and objectives, and coaching/mentoring.
  • Develop annual budget and monitor ongoing expenses.

 

What you will need in order to be successful:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Political Science, Journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • 7 – 8 years public affairs and advocacy communications, especially in health policy issues
  • 3 – 4 years of supervisory
  • Demonstrated program budgeting experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and communications applications
  • Superior writing and editing skills and superb attention to detail
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated experience successfully collaborating with stakeholders across teams and departments, and with organizational leadership
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and quickly adapt to changing conditions
  • Excellent project management skills

 

Ideal candidates will also contribute:

  • Experience in public policy/public affairs, especially dealing with health policy issues
