What you will be doing
As of August 24, 2021, AmerisourceBergen requires all U.S. team members to be fully vaccinated and show proof of completed vaccine prior to your first day of employment. This position will be US based virtual role (Central time zone is best).
Under general direction of the Senior Director, State Government Advocacy and in close collaboration with the U.S. Public Policy & Advocacy team, responsible for protecting and enhancing AmerisourceBergen’s (AB) interests with state and local governments; contributing to the development and execution of political, legislative and regulatory programs and strategies in the states to ensure favorable public policy outcomes. Successful candidate will have a history of proven multi-state advocacy skills; possess the ability to work effectively independently and in teams; demonstrate effective oral and written communications skills; and the acumen to contribute to the success, effectiveness, and future growth of AB’s State Government Advocacy function.
- Will be responsible for specific priority states across the U.S. and/or priority legislative issues
- Monitors, analyzes and prioritizes emerging state regulatory and legislative issues affecting AB and its business units; consults with middle and senior level management across the organization to determine the impact on business practices, operational costs and efficiencies, and profitability
- Works U.S. Public Policy and Advocacy team to develop recommendations and implement policy positions as directed and in consultation with the Policy & Advocacy leadership and to other executives; supports and actively participates in AB’s Global Policy Committee activities to ensure corporate alignment and prioritization on issues; including counterfeit/pedigree and distribution licensing, controlled substance abuse and drug diversion prevention, pharmaceutical and pharmacy pricing and reimbursement, tax legislation, pharmacy and physician customer legislation
- Builds relationships and serves as one of AB’s key points of contact with state and local legislative and regulatory officials, including Boards of Pharmacy, Departments of Health and other executive branch agencies that regulate AB and our customers
- Works to elevate political and economic profile of AB with key local and state public officials; plans and conducts tours, meetings with AB executives and other events that provide education, build relationships and goodwill
- Executes innovative state advocacy strategies to favorably influence legislation and regulations; educates public officials and staff, set up and hold meetings with AB experts and participates in industry lobbying activities; contributes to development of effective grassroots advocacy programs that leverage AB’s facilities, team members, customers and suppliers across the country; engages in activities of senior management at the business unit level, AB communications, and other corporate functions to achieve policy objectives
- Supports and actively participates in meetings with key customers, trade associations and other business stakeholders on issues of mutual interest
- Serves as a representative and spokesperson for AB with HDA, industry colleagues and supply chain customers and suppliers; works with Senior Director, State Government Advocacy and the various public policy team members representing commercial business verticals to ensure AB’s policy objectives are incorporated into HDA policy positions and provides leadership on lobbying and policy- making initiatives
- Works in collaboration with the Senior Director of State Government Advocacy to supervise the activities of state contract lobbyist consultants hired to represent AB’s interests in state capitols
- Supports the development and growth of AB’s Political Action Committee in coordination with AB team members PAC manager and U.S. Public Policy and Advocacy goals and objectives; executes programs to generate new PAC members, including solicitation materials, presentations, and promotional events and contributes to publication of the PAC newsletter
- Contributes regular content to customer-facing advocacy websites in order to showcase AB’s support of our customers and to facilitate grassroots advocacy at the pharmacy and physician levels
- Will collaborate with the Senior Director, State Government Advocacy, U.S. Public Policy colleagues and commercial leaders to build a state legislative and policy risk register as a team priority of defining and prioritizing state legislative issues
- Works with Senior Director, State Government Advocacy to manage administrative and PAC contribution budgets
- Works with state team to update, calendar, attend and document important meetings
What your background should look like
- Requires a minimum of 7 years of state government affairs experience, within a multi-state capacity
- Corporate government affairs experience required
- Direct lobbying experience required
- Healthcare or pharmaceutical policy experience is a plus
- Policy analysis experience is a plus
- Requires broad training in political science, public administration, business management, communications or marketing generally obtained through completion of a four-year bachelor’s degree program
- Juris Doctor or Masters degree in political science or public administration preferred
- Superior organizational skills and attention to detail
- Demonstrated proofreading experience
- Strong strategic thinking ability; inquisitive and driven to learn
- Excellent interpersonal and professional skills
- Ability to clearly and confidently express ideas, recommendations, decisions and rationales to both internal and external teams; superior writing and oral-communication skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced corporate environment
- Demonstrated lobbying skills and experience
- Ability to collaborate with others
- Ability to evaluate facts, determine alternative solutions to problems, evaluate courses of action, and make sound management decisions
- Strong ability to manage workload and conflicting priorities to meet deadlines
- Travel – This position is remote and can require travel up to 50% of the time during busy parts of the year
