The Office of Responsible AI (ORA) within Microsoft’s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) team leads this effort. With a cross-company mandate, ORA establishes internal policies for responsible AI practices, engages Responsible AI Champs to support program rollout, and reviews projects requiring additional input based on potential impact. Additionally, ORA contributes to shaping new laws, norms, and standards to advance responsible AI for societal benefit. The Senior Program Manager role is integral to ORA’s Internal Policy & Practice team, supporting the implementation of the Responsible AI Standard.

Qualifications

Minimum / Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Operations, Finance, or related field AND 6+ years work experience in program management, process management, process improvement OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Law degree, other doctoral degree, or academic research related to policy development.
  • Experience in large-scale computing, modeling, or applied research/data science.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience in or with large, matrixed organizations.
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven track record of engaging and influencing stakeholders.
  • Ability to work across disciplines and cultures.
  • Effective team player dedicated to collective successes.
  • Proficiency in working collaboratively with multiple departments and executives.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and adapt to rapidly changing environments.
  • Commitment to the company’s core values, ethics, integrity, and diversity & inclusion.

Business Program Management IC5 – Compensation

The typical base pay range for this role in the U.S. is USD $112,200 – $194,800 per year. Different ranges apply to specific work locations, such as the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, with the base pay range in those locations being USD $142,200 – $213,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  1. Write internal policies for product teams building Microsoft’s AI systems, platform services, and features.
  2. Coordinate internal stakeholders and expert deliberations, aligning internal policies with regulatory requirements.
  3. Collaborate with Microsoft Research, conduct literature reviews, and manage external expert engagements to define and maintain a generative AI harms taxonomy and usage policies.
  4. Translate Responsible AI Standards, research, and policy into effective controls and scalable implementation practices.
  5. Lead tracking, coordination, and communication of responsible AI implementation practice development schedules across teams.
  6. Monitor progress, drive accountability, identify potential risk areas, dependencies, and technical blockers.
  7. Drive mitigations and solutions for effective and efficient compliance efforts by engineering teams.
