The Team

The Program Advocacy and Communications team works in partnership with technical program teams and other functional teams in Global Policy and Advocacy (GPA) to achieve policy and finance goals by:

  • Developing and coordinating the execution of policy, advocacy, finance and communications strategies.
  • Leveraging leadership and foundation voices to implement advocacy strategies.
  • Developing and managing a grant portfolio dedicated to achieving high impact.
  • Directly advocating with private and public-sector leaders, influencers and media to achieve advocacy outcomes.
  • Leading issue-specific communications, in service of advocacy goals.
  • Developing policy recommendations or proposals in partnership with programmatic and regional offices.

 

Your Role

This Senior Program Officer serves as the daily lead for global policy and advocacy efforts for Gender Equality communications. As part of this, you will strategically develop and manage one or more portfolio of grants and contracts requiring high-level grant management skills, monitoring and evaluation.

Reporting to the Deputy Director, Gender Equality Advocacy and Communications you will work as a key advisor on the gender equality advocacy and communications strategy, contribute to the continued development of the team’s strategic vision, while partnering closely with team leadership to set the overall strategy and goals for the team.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Develop, lead and implement a communications strategy in support of the Gender Equality program and advocacy strategy.
  • Lead a portfolio of grants and contracts to advance the advocacy communications outcomes in support of the Gender Equality program and advocacy strategy, including reviewing letters of inquiry and grant proposals and providing clear, concise and insightful written analyses and recommendations for funding. Counsel advocacy and program colleagues on potential inclusion of communications elements into grant proposals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key communications leads of grantees, donors, and civil society organizations. Proactively identify potential platforms to elevate messages that address priority development issues.
  • Develop and implement a proactive media and communications plan for the foundation to advance its gender equality strategy, coordinating with internal partners and managing external vendors to assist in execution. Contribute to the design of new strategies, collaborations and implementation plans to ensure long-term sustainability and impact.
  • Contribute to the development of new partnerships and advocacy and communications practices by formulating recommendations based on monitoring, analyzing trends relevant to global health and development and formulating recommendations for strategy approaches and message development.
  • Represent the foundation to key program-related external constituencies, as appropriate, related to area of expertise and responsibilities of the position.
  • This role will manage one Program Officer, Communications, Gender Equality, ensuring successful employee onboarding, communicating performance expectations, creating goal alignment, integrating project and change management, giving and seeking feedback, providing coaching, measuring progress and holding people accountable, supporting employee development, and recognizing achievement and lessons learned.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure gender equality is integrated throughout the foundation’s public communications efforts.
  • Advise Executive Leadership use of voice in support of the foundation’s Gender Equality goals.
  • This role is responsible for high quality interactions and clear and consistent communications with grantees and partners.

 

Your Experience

  • Advanced degree with 7+ years of experience, or equivalent experience
  • A breadth of knowledge and experience with the gender equality community and with a range of key gender policy issues related to gender equality.
  • Experience developing and managing communications campaigns and complex global strategies in support of policy initiatives, advocacy programs and events.
  • Ability to learn new concepts quickly and communicate effectively with different audiences.
  • Knowledge of how to use and experience using communications to achieve advocacy goals and policy change.
  • Proven ability to lead and influence others in a constructive manner and to build and sustain collaborative relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively synthesize information to reach diverse audiences and build consensus. Clear and coherent writing style.
  • Ability to effectively alternate between thinking strategically and high-quality execution.
  • High standards of personal integrity; and comfortable in a wide range of cultural, geographic and operational situations, demonstrating culturally-sensitive behavior with a diversity of people.
  • Effective as a collaborator in complex internal and external organizations, including the ability to work with efficiency and tact.
  • Calm under pressure with capability to lead and inspire confidence through ambiguity or change.
