The National WIC Association (NWA), located in Washington, DC, seeks a full-time Senior Public Policy Associate to join its diverse team of sixteen dedicated professionals. NWA is a high-impact non-profit, member organization that represents more than 2,000 service provider agencies that offer quality nutrition education, breastfeeding support, health care and other social referral services to women and young children in over 10,000 WIC clinics nationwide.

The Senior Public Policy Associate is responsible for supporting the Public Policy Team’s efforts to secure meaningful legislative, regulatory, and administrative change to strengthen WIC’s role in supporting the nutrition and health of low-income families. The Senior Associate works under the direction of the Senior Director of Public Policy to build relationships on Capitol Hill and in the Administration to effectively and timely communicate NWA’s advocacy and programmatic priorities.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

1. Meets directly with legislative staff, Administration officials, and other policymakers on Capitol Hill to build awareness and support for NWA’s advocacy priorities

2. Drafts policy-related communications – including legislative updates in weekly newsletters, letters to the editor, and fact sheets on legislative topics – to ensure NWA’s grassroots membership is empowered to advocate on behalf of WIC priorities.

3. Represent NWA at meetings with allied organizations to bring a nutrition and public health perspective to intersectional anti-poverty coalitions.

4. Supports NWA Public Policy Team in staging events (currently, virtual) that raise awareness of key policy priorities, including legislative briefings and grassroots advocacy meetings. Contribute to NWA’s conferences, including NWA’s annual National Policy Conference.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.

• Minimum of 2-years professional experience, including legislative or lobbying experience, ideally in a federal legislative office.

• Excellent writing skills, particularly for a policy audience.

• Strong public speaking skills.

• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.

• Spanish language skills are a plus.
