Senior Specialist, Media Relations

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is seeking a talented and strategic Senior Specialist, Media Relations to join our awesome team! The media relations senior specialist helps execute Habitat for Humanity’s media strategies and tactics with a primary focus on earned national media that will amplify the organization’s global brand, advocacy efforts, and thought leadership position. They are responsible for identifying, pursuing and coordinating Habitat’s response to media opportunities that will establish the organization as a prominent thought leader on affordable housing, strengthen the integration of advocacy and innovation into Habitat’s media profile, and raise Habitat’s visibility and influence.

The media relations senior specialist is responsible for media outreach and engagement that will generate high-quality, prominent news coverage about Habitat’s programs, campaigns and initiatives; coordinating media requests and preparing interview materials; drafting media materials such as press releases, media alerts, contributed articles, messaging and talking points; providing media counsel to Habitat affiliates as necessary and requested; and monitoring Habitat’s media coverage and providing recommendations and analysis based on the coverage.

Responsibilities:

• Identify proactive media opportunities and conduct media outreach to generate high-quality, prominent media coverage that will advance Habitat’s mission
• Draft media materials such as press releases, media advisories, messaging talking points and other content
• Manage and coordinate media responses; draft interview prep materials and talking points; provide senior leadership with media training as needed
• Provide media relations counsel to Habitat affiliates as necessary or requested; develop guidance and other materials as needed
• Support media relations for major Habitat for Humanity initiatives and campaigns
• Provide media training and consulting to senior leadership, subject matter experts, and affiliate leadership as needed and requested
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media, public relations, communications or equivalent combination of education and work experience
• At least 5 years of directly related professional experience
• Outstanding written communication skills, with mastery of AP Style
• Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team and cross-departmentally
• Strong understanding of U.S. media and competency engaging media professionals, with proven track record of placements in top news media
• Proven experience providing effective media relations counsel in crisis situations
• Cross-cultural competence
• Ability to apply emotional intelligence to communicate effectively, empathize, and identify solutions
• Willingness to engage in crucial conversations to create mutual purpose
• Personal commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Ability to know when help is needed, and to ask for it.

Preferred:

• Experience working in nonprofit communications and/or with a public relations agency
