Senior Vice President, Communications & Public Affairs

The SVP, Communications & Public Affairs reports to IA’s President & CEO and is responsible for developing and directing the execution of IA’s communications and public affairs strategies and tactics. IA is a true team environment, and the successful candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with other members of IA’s senior staff to ensure that IA speaks with a consistent “voice,” and that communications strategies remain both tightly aligned with the association’s policy priorities and amplify our advocacy work in innovative ways.

Key Activities & Responsibilities

  • Leveraging experience and expertise to offer strategic guidance and optimize IA’s ability to convey its policy positions to key stakeholders and the public by:
  • Developing annual strategic plans and budgets, and overseeing IA’s communications & public affairs expenditures throughout the year
  • Interfacing regularly with IA member company representatives to keep them abreast of IA’s communications and public affairs efforts
  • Leading and managing IA’s in-house team of communications, creative, and event management professionals by:
    • Fostering a collaborative team dynamic within the team
    • Providing direction, regular advice, and guidance to staff
    • Supporting the professional development of team members, including by offering formal and informal feedback regarding performance to reward success and identify opportunities for growth
    • Recruiting, developing, and retaining staff to support association activities
  • Coordinating closely with IA’s GR, Policy, and State teams to ensure communications strategies and messaging are incorporated in all efforts across the organization
  • Cultivating strong relationships with and acting as a point of contact for members of the press
  • Ensuring the effectiveness of IA communications and advocacy products by determining the timing, tone, content, and quality of content published to the IA website, social media accounts, reports, and other traditional media
  • Supervising external consultants and vendors
  • Presenting strategies to and accomplishments for IA’s Board of Directors
  • Performing other duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • 15+ years prior communications and media relations experience, including budget and staff management
  • Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to successfully execute creative policy communications strategies in a very fast-paced environment
  • Strong analytical, time-management, and project planning skills
  • Experience with research, data, and economic analysis
  • A track record of successfully motivating staff, including by clearly defining goals and objectives
  • Knowledge of and experience evaluating and working with consultants

Preferred Experience/Skills

  • Prior experience working for a trade association, a major public affairs/communications firm, a large technology company or another company in an highly-regulated industry that interacts frequently with the Administration and Capitol Hill
  • Prior experience in a senior executive/management role
  • Working knowledge of key IA policy issues, including data privacy, online content moderation, copyright protection, etc.
  • Experience overseeing the successful execution of both small and large-scale live and online events, including congressional delegation (or similar) trips, fundraisers/auctions, conventions, Hill briefings, and/or panel discussions
