Senior Vice President, Global Brand and Portfolio Public Relations
Marriott International’s Senior Vice President (SVP) of Global Brand & Portfolio PR works with the brand and marketing leadership to define the strategic vision for the communications for Marriott’s portfolio of 30 brands, using PR in ways that both engage and inspire action by consumers and influencers. The Senior Vice President of Global Brand & Portfolio PR is focused on creatively driving brand affinity, including awareness of and demand for specific brands as well as for brand segments (e.g., MILUX (Marriott’s Luxury Portfolio), Premium, Select). In addition, the Senior Vice President of Global Brand & Portfolio PR is also responsible for brand and marketing executive positioning as well as telling Marriott’s marketing innovation story.
The Senior Vice President of Global Brand & Portfolio PR uses strategic ideation to design and implement break through PR activations, develop transformational media or other brand partnerships and leverage trends to generate coverage that leads to bottom-line results. This role is a key partner with Marriott’s global brand and marketing leadership and collaborates with PR teams leading communications in global markets as well as for Marriott Bonvoy, emerging businesses, corporate and internal. Working in a matrixed organization, this role leads the development of global proactive PR campaigns that drive preference for Marriott Bonvoy and the portfolio of 30 brands to support the company’s brand and marketing strategies.
The Senior Vice President of Global Brand & Portfolio PR reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Global Chief Communications and Public Affairs Officer and on a dotted line basis to the Global Brand & Marketing Officer; this position leads a team of eight to ten PR professionals. Brand Public Relations is an integral function of Marriott’s Global Communications & Public Affairs (GCPA) department which, in addition to Global Brand and Portfolio PR, leads Corporate Communications, Internal Communications, Government Affairs, Social Impact, and Multicultural Affairs initiatives for the Company. This role can be based in Bethesda, Maryland or New York City.
Global perspective: This role develops global proactive PR strategies and is charged with ensuring global message alignment and appropriate regional implementation, as well as integrating continent priorities into brand initiatives. The position will ensure that brand priorities are also integrated and reflected in annual continental PR plans.
Creativity: A key focus of this role is creativity and the imperative to ideate, develop and execute game changing activations, partnerships and events for industry leadership moments for individual brands, segments and the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio of brands.
Managing Multiple Brands: Marriott’s portfolio includes 30 brands – this position supports a multi-brand portfolio and must prioritize initiatives and resources. The position will be responsible for driving PR strategies for Marriott’s overall brand portfolio, Marriott’s marketing initiatives, Marriott’s individual brands as well as Marriott’s brand segments including: MILUX (Luxury), Classic Premium, Distinctive Premium, Classic Select, Distinctive Select, Classic Longer Stay, Distinctive Longer Stay and Collections brands. This position collaborates with Marriott’s brand and marketing disciplines to ensure that brand public relations initiatives drive consumer action as well as brand distinction and leverage the power of Marriott International’s portfolio of brands and Marriott Bonvoy in service of the brand and marketing strategies.
Luxury: Marriott’s MILUX portfolio includes the company’s eight luxury brands. The SVP navigates the distinctive world of luxury PR by establishing and achieving PR goals for the MILUX portfolio to align with the Brand goals.
Player/Coach: This position will oversee, manage, and mentor a team focused on executing the SVP of Global Brand & Portfolio’s vision and plans including partnerships, experiential PR activations, media relations and leaning into trends. This position will also oversee outside public relations resources aligned with this work. Responsible for creating and sustaining a strong, positive work environment in both Bethesda and New York.
Collaboration: The position will partner closely with the Brand management teams, Brand and Portfolio Marketing, as well as other internal stakeholders. This role works hand in glove with the VPs of Marketing to ensure brand initiatives amplify Marriott’s paid marketing campaigns.
Budget Oversight & Measurement: This position oversees the PR budget allocated by the brands ensuring accurate forecasts, on-time reporting and executes initiatives on time and on-budget. This position will also monitor and measure success using relevant tools and resources and will routinely deliver goals and metrics to senior management.
Executive Positioning/Storyteller: This position is also responsible for brand and marketing executive positioning as well as telling Marriott’s marketing innovation story.
PR Counsel: This role provides ongoing PR counsel to brand teams and properties. Oversees annual strategic calendar of special events, including halo openings, experiential marketing events, media familiarization trips, etc. Creates and develops PR messaging and executes earned media plans and strategies, major market events, and communications training – including the development, editing and approval of press materials and PR presentations. Proactively develops and implements brand specific PR plans, campaigns and strategies.
GCPA Team Member: This position works closely with other functions within Global Communications and Public Affairs discipline. This role coordinates brand growth announcements with Corporate Communications to ensure messaging is aligned with consumer facing, trade and business press as appropriate. This role is also responsible for working in partnership on brand crisis issues with the Corporate Communications team. This position also supports PR campaigns to amplify the company’s priorities in the Multicultural and Diversity space as relevant for particular brands and maximizes brand and portfolio PR and publicity opportunities stemming from the company’s Social Impact activities and initiatives in close collaboration with the Corporate Communications team. As a leadership position, this role is responsible for helping to ensure that GCPA Department goals and initiatives are achieved and assists in department or corporate initiatives and special projects.
Requirements for Position
Successful candidates should possess knowledge and experience and demonstrate strong leadership and relationship skills as follows:
An exceptional background reflecting 20+ years of communications experience in public relations focused on consumer brands: large consumer brand portfolios and/or luxury brand experience; hospitality experience or knowledgeable about the hospitality business. Demonstrated track record of using strategic ideation to design and implement break through PR activations. Must have experience leading a multi-brand portfolio with an ability to prioritize initiatives and resources.
Superior communications skills, both verbal and written.
Strong ability to develop global proactive PR strategies; experience either working internationally or working on brands with large global footprints.
Experience leading a PR organization as well as overseeing the work of PR agencies. Ability to develop and implement highly effective strategic and measurable communications plans.
Visionary, persistent and unafraid of tackling difficult tasks, yet also systematic and analytical in approach to work. Customer-focused, creative problem-solving skills, strong organizational skills, and drive to continuously improve. A quick learner with an ability to manage multiple PR campaigns simultaneously across a portfolio of 30+ brands. Must have the ability to take risks or try new methods and channels to drive impact.
Experience navigating a large, matrixed, corporate organization with the ability to influence multiple stakeholders. Outstanding interpersonal skills to effectively build relationships and interact with associates at all levels within the organization and with the general public.
As comfortable rolling up their sleeves to get work done as they are coming up with the overall strategy. This position requires someone who is a talent builder and inspires success in individuals and teams, with a focus on team member development.
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably with a concentration in Communications, Journalism, English, or Marketing; Master’s degree a plus.
