Social Media Associate

The Trevor Project

About Trevor

The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.

Overview of the role

The Social Media Associate is vital to managing The Trevor Project’s growing social media presence as a leader in LGBTQ mental health and suicide prevention. Reporting to the Digital Marketing Manager, this role will advance Trevor’s mission via social media marketing strategies. The Social Media Associate will manage online communities, curate and post content, and moderate conversation across platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.

Who you are

  • Culturally Attuned. You understand and can message to a wide variety of intersectional identities, and are up-to-date with what’s going on amongst all of our audiences. You understand what they care about and what issues, influencers, and media are relevant to them.

  • Creative. You have an eye for making a feed beautiful, and discovering new LGBTQ artists, up-and-coming content creators, and micro-influencers.

  • Self-Aware. You practice self-care, know your triggers, set digital boundaries, and refill your own cup so you can care for the LGBTQ youth we serve.

  • Succinct and Detail-oriented. You know how to boil down an article into a short caption without any typos, and you don’t press send on anything that’s problematic or reactive.

  • Action-oriented. You know how to get things done and feel comfortable with the fast pace of social media.

  • A Good Listener. You listen to the feedback we’re receiving from our audience, and the dialogues happening in the communities we serve, to gain ideas and perspective for how to better communicate with our audience.

  • Organized and efficient. You know how to manage multiple social media platforms daily. You can communicate clearly and concisely. The moment you see a problem, you quickly come up with solutions and then implement them.

  • Optimistic. Taking on all the world’s problems as your own can be overwhelming, and the right candidate for this role is someone who looks for solutions, cultivates positivity, stays grounded, and commits to the process.

  • Passionate. You care about LGBTQ youth. You care about saving lives. You want to come to work and feel inspired every day. You want to change the world.

  • Fun. The work we do is very serious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun. We know how to have a good time and you should too.

What you’ll do

  • Bring professional and lived experience working in online community management to moderate conversations and handle customer service on our channels

  • Manage the drafting and distribution of social media posts, including daily self-care reminders, relevant articles, press mentions, and corporate content

  • Distribute corporate campaigns, using Sprout Social to tag content and running reports for corporate partners to gauge the success of the campaign

  • Listen to the dialogue online and make note of any current events or issues that should inform how The Trevor Project shows up in the conversation

  • Identify emerging influencers, micro-influencers, artists, and talent that are popular with our audience to follow and engage

  • Learn new social media features as they are released by platforms and utilize them in day-to-day social media management

  • Handle daily customer service, including common volunteer and donor questions and LGBTQ youth looking for crisis services and resources

  • Track prominent fundraisers and talent outreach, connecting interested parties with our Comms team or Development team to follow up

  • Support the Advocacy & Government Affairs department’s media outreach efforts by engaging our audience around current issues and calls to action

  • Work alongside our Digital Marketing Manager to ensure all external communications adhere to safe messaging standards and best practices for talking about mental health, suicide, and LGBTQ identity

  • Some evenings and weekends may be required

  • Generous vacation and holidays (like a full day off to celebrate Harvey Milk Day!), including three half-day Fridays during the summer

  • Comprehensive health insurance (we pay 100% of your premiums for medical, dental, and life), including gender affirmation surgery

  • Flexibility to work from anywhere in the U.S. (we provide the technology, a monthly internet stipend and reimbursement to outfit your work-from-home space!)

  • Fun virtual office environment and passionate team

  • Online Subscription to Headspace, a digital meditation platform

  • The Trevor Project is an equal opportunity employer

  • Meaningful work at an organization that is saving the lives of LGBTQ young people across America every day
