The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing effective communication and marketing strategies to help advance the language revitalization, development, sales, and public policy goals of The Language Conservancy (TLC) and its affiliate organizations.

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Social Media and eNewsletter Specialistis responsible for implementing a diverse set communications priorities. Duties and responsibilities include: developing and maintaining overall strategic communication plans; maintaining newsletters, websites, and social media; generating news releases; promoting news coverage and opinion columns through traditional and emerging media; coordinating with our public relations partner on Social Media and eNewsletter Specialistand advertising campaigns and placement; and serving as a spokesperson.

The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialistwill work to advance the public awareness of and engagement with The Language Conservancy and will increase the Conservancy’s national public presence and outreach. Social Media and eNewsletter Specialistwill promote a favorable image of the organization- its events, issues, and initiatives. The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialist will work closely with the Development Department, Graphics/Layout team, and Events Coordinator to support fundraisers and annual fundraising appeals; and will work closely with the Language Revitalization Department to promote our language revitalization goals with our constituencies; and with the Sales Department to assist in the marketing of new products and services. The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialistis responsible for ensuring that communications tell the full range of the Conservancy’s work through e-newsletters, websites, video, Facebook, Twitter and other related promotional media. The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialistwill proactively manage and implement new and ongoing communications initiatives, identify target audiences and write or implement a variety of communication mediums (stories, op-ed pieces, social media, videos, television programs, PSAs, etc.) to communicate and further the mission and work of The Language Conservancy.

The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialistis primarily responsible for maintaining and updating the content across a large portfolio of digital domains. She/he plays a critical role in the writing and editing of content, managing the design and production of a diverse range of digital and print media including: websites, monthly e-newsletters, social media posts, informational posters, brochures, promotional items, banners, and advertising. She/he directs and develops the TLC’s social media strategy, promoting brand awareness, generating inbound traffic and encouraging engagement with the TLC’s varied constituencies.

The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialist also works with internal managers and staff to identify and respond to communications opportunities and issues. The ideal candidate also maintains consistent visual image and writing style across media; tracks, analyzes, and reports on communication results; works with senior managers and staff to make and implement strategic recommendations to enhance the organization’s internal and external communications.

Major Responsibilities/Activities:

Write press releases, emails, articles, blogs, newsletters and other organizational communications and publicity materials.The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialist must be skilled in media relations- being able to develop and maintain numerous media contacts. The Social Media and eNewsletter Specialist will regularly be the face and voice of the organization, and will need be engaging and compelling with media interviews and write excellent and persuasive copy.

  • (25%) Respond to emails, follow-up with contacts, coordinate publicity.
  • (25%) Generate written content for editorials, press releases, publicity copy, newsletters, and marketing.
  • (25%) Manage and update social media and websites.
  • (15%) Work with PR Partners on campaigns
  • (5%) Identify customers and target audiences for editorial opportunities, press releases, marketing, and publicity.
  • (5%) Manage and track publicity performance and work to improve audience engagement.


Work with Executive Director to identify objectives and priorities. Create and implement the organization’s strategic marketing and communications plan. Develop and manage communications content for all organizational initiatives across all media platforms: print, web, email, social media, video and others with attention to consistency and quality. Prepare news releases, fact sheets, letters, and other communications as needed. Establish, revise, and maintain organizational event timelines and associated documents. Generate media placements- highlighting Conservancy work and events. Work with other departments to ensure a cohesive strategy around diverse organizational projects and initiatives. Work with Development department to fulfill development campaign needs. Ensure that the TLC brand and affiliate brands serve Conservancy’s strategic goals and deliver consistent messaging. Develop and implement strategy for engagement with donor prospects and lead outreach efforts to potential language learners. Measure effectiveness of social content by tracking performance and working to improve audience engagement.

Qualifications Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field or equivalent experience. 3+ years of marketing or communications experience. Knowledge of various writing techniques including newsletter, press releases and promotional copy. Demonstrated success handling diverse communication efforts for a national organization with excellent written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated expertise and experience in public relations, writing, editing, content marketing and written communications; Experience managing and implementing media strategies and measuring results. Experience in digital communications, advertising, strategic marketing partnerships, new audience engagement and member acquisition.

Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms, their respective participants, how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios, and the relevant metrics for each. Experience with Native American issues and awareness and sensitivity to community concerns. Ability to align organizational concerns, goals and objectives. Understanding of advocacy and mission oriented work. Ability to make sound judgments relative to communication strategy.

Experience with Project management. Ability to serve as a spokesperson when needed.

Commitment to keeping up to date with changes in the field of communications and media relations. Strong working knowledge of WordPress, Google Analytics, and working knowledge of blogging platforms. Strong technical understanding and ability to pick up new tools quickly. Ability to work with teams and collaborate with other departments. Microsoft Office skills (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) Ability to manage error-free a large diverse digital portfolio and prioritize, and be detail-oriented, and work in a fast-paced environment. Ability to work in a team environment, often working across departments. Ability to take initiative and be proactive; uses good judgment.

Flexible and adaptable. Ability to use creativity and marketing skills to help generate brand awareness, sales and promote customer service through the social media networks. Ability to contribute to the development and implementation of campaigns, of all sizes, with some focus on piloting new ideas and tactics. Ability to provide analysis on active social media strategies and provide recommendations on opportunities for improvement. Ability to identify engagement gaps, formulate and recommend ideas for expansion into new demographics and business areas. Ability to be team player but able to independently when needed. Must have Superb organizational and administrative skills. Must Be Detailed, disciplined, and thorough. Must have a professional appearance and demeanor with a great attitude. Excellent customer service, and public interaction skills. Ability to manage time effectively and bring projects to completion despite conflicting deadlines.
