Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO)

Summary: Assists the director of crisis and public health communications with project deliverables and operational support for federally funded projects important to state and territorial health officials and public health communicators.

Principal Functions:

  • Assist in the management of project activities, budget, and deliverables, including the activities of outside consultants.
  • Engage with key stakeholders, partners, and project officers to ensure project deliverables are met.
  • Researches, collects, and synthesizes information for technical assistance requests.
  • Tracks communications and media trends as it relates to COVID-19, health equity, public health, and risk and crisis communications.
  • Support a nationwide risk and crisis communications training program through planning, implementation, and documentation of training material and the collection of participant registrations and feedback surveys.
  • Work closely with other members of the ASTHO communications team to carry out support tasks and activities for risk and crisis communications operations and deliverables.
  • Support the designing, editing, and reviewing of program materials.
  • Serve as a communications resource on risk and crisis communications related topics, such as COVID-19 vaccine, COVID-19 vaccine confidence, infectious disease, immunization, and health equity.
  • Support project planning efforts of ASTHO’s PR team related to meeting coordination, agenda development, technical assistance, and training/meeting materials development.
  • Support capacity-building webinars, podcasts, and other virtual learning opportunities for ASTHO members and partners.
  • Contributes to the development of webinars, trainings, reports, blogs, issue briefs, case studies, blog posts, infographics, newsletters, and articles for publication.
  • Responsible for weekly and monthly progress reports and updates.
  • Organize and provide relevant materials and links for the ASTHO website.
  • Perform administrative tasks and other duties as assigned when necessary.


  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Relevant experience in strategic communications, risk and crisis communications, or public relations.
  • Some knowledge of risk and crisis communications, public health communications, health equity, social justice, infectious disease, and immunization.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills. Ability to present information clearly.
  • Ability to promptly manage multiple priorities and complete assigned tasks.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, manage multiple projects and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
