POSITION SUMMARY:

The Advocacy Specialist will execute campaigns that support the Foundation’s efforts to ensure that all people living with CF have access to the health care and coverage they need to stay healthy. Advocacy Specialists work in close collaboration with other members of the Advocacy & Government Affairs team to implement on-the-ground campaign activities, including management of volunteers, local coalitions of representatives from national stakeholders, planning and execution of events, and coordinating earned media opportunities. In partnership with State Policy Specialists and across departments, Advocacy Specialists help to develop strategy, tactics and approach to both federal and state policy advocacy activities, assisting in the development and distribution of communications materials, and tracking key programmatic metrics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work to build grassroots volunteer capacity to strengthen Foundation policy advocacy efforts, acting as CF community organizer; recommend appropriate tactics necessary to advance Foundation position in states (i.e. campaigns; op-eds; in-person meetings) and ensure proper execution of each tactical approach.
Serve as the conduit of information between policy team, communications, and chapter staff and volunteers.
Manage relationships including external consultants/lobbyists to identify opportunities for and execute engagement with state legislators. Work to identify local organizations to engage in advocacy efforts; establish relationships (internally and externally) and coordinate with key partners, including but not limited to local representatives of national patients’ organizations.
Plan and execute grassroots advocacy events including, but not limited to State Advocacy Days. This will include event recruitment, developing policy agenda, identifying legislators and other meeting targets, coordinating with local consultants, and providing event support.
Collaborate with chapter staff to execute events and programs that support volunteer engagement, management, and capacity-building initiatives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum 4 years of experience in fast-paced work environment, with prior experience in public policy, state legislature or political campaign highly preferred; relevant experience may be substituted for advanced degree.
Demonstrated knowledge of legislative and political processes.
Familiarity with Phone2Action, Salsa, NGP VAN, or similar mobilization software preferred.
Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal skills, with ability to cultivate and strengthen relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Team player with positive attitude and strong work ethic.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Senior Manager, Policy & Advocacy.
No direct reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperature.
No heavy lifting required. Minimal travel (e.g., 2x/yr.) to conferences and meetings, as necessary.
