Sr. Director, Corporate Communication Lead, R&D and Medical
Moderna is seeking a Senior Director, Corporate Communication Lead, R&D and Medical to work closely with the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer in developing and executing the integrated global corporate affairs strategy, which includes corporate communication, corporate social responsibility, foundation/philanthropy support, crisis communication and issues management, and brand and reputation management within the earned media space.
S/he will have a particular focus on integrating a communications strategy across functions and therapeutic areas within R&D and Medical. With a special focus on these areas, s/he will strengthen the company’s reputation by developing, enhancing and protecting its brand narrative, and supporting additional brand-related activities as appropriate and cleared by the Chief Brand Officer.

This individual will be highly curious and energized by working in an area of emerging science, medicine and technology and thrive on helping the company tell a complex story externally.
S/he will have excellent written and verbal communications skills; be fluent in social and digital communications engagement and strategy; have experience working with media (ideally in the healthcare space); and be comfortable working with corporate and program teams across a complex organization and multiple sites. In addition to communicating about our platform, pipeline and the disease areas we’re focused on, they will also help drive awareness of our commitment to corporate social responsibility.
The role will be based in Cambridge, MA, will report to the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer and will be a key member of the Corporate Affairs leadership team.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
Support Moderna’s mission by partnering with the President of Moderna, Chief Medical Officer and their leadership teams to establish all short- and long-term corporate affairs and communication strategic plans for key stakeholders, and enterprise-level plans in areas that intersect with Moderna’s rich scientific and medical ambitions
Provide execution planning for these strategies, including in some cases direct executional support and in some cases leadership of agency or contractor resources
Build direct and productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders necessary for effective execution of these plans, including medical opinion leaders, journalists, internal subject matter experts, executives in other functional areas and select Board members
Participate as member of both the R&D and Medical leadership teams, supporting the teams with communication strategies and plans and bringing insight and input to the teams from perspectives of media and other stakeholders with which you are engaging
Inform and engage the enterprise media relations team on all proactive strategies, opportunistic situations and potential reactive matters which involve earned media
Coordinate on media outreach approach, spokespeople and briefing responsibilities
Inform and engage head of Corporate Affairs and appropriate other teams on all proactive strategies, opportunistic situations and potential reactive matters with enterprise implications
Work with key industry, technology, business partners and strategic collaborators in developing opportunities for joint engagement
Lead or support additional projects as needed
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
10+ years of experience in Corporate Affairs in a biopharma, healthcare or similar science-led, regulated industry, included demonstrated functional leadership
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in communications, marketing, or life sciences preferred
Strong executive presence; proven ability to work with and influence senior leadership effectively and appropriately
Experience and adeptness in rapid response in a complex and fast-paced organization
Demonstrated sound judgement
Proven track record of driving science communications
An understanding of the drug development process and biopharma space; prior experience working on topics related to oncology, rare diseases or infectious diseases is helpful but not required
Genuine interest in media relations, social media and commitment to staying current on healthcare news
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills & relationship-builder, including media relationships
A high level of initiative, a strong work ethic, creativity and the ability to balance multiple assignments
Ability to develop trusted relationships and engage with senior leaders as well as the confidence to coach them in a candid manner
