The Senior Director of External Communications is responsible for the delivery of effective communications materials, tools and programs that directly support OptumInsight and broader Optum business growth. This requires building trusted advisor relationships by understanding business needs, shaping the ‘right’ solutions, and bringing the best of Optum to address business needs.

 

Positions in this function design and coordinate company communications, including internal and / or external communications. Responsible for maintaining policies and procedures and monitoring company media, which may include company websites. May manage public relations activities, including public information and shareholder information services.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as lead communications partner to the OptumInsight CEO, leadership team and other business stakeholders
  • Develop, implement and continually evaluate high – impact communications programs that directly support OptumInsight and broader Optum business objectives
  • Lead execution of strategic programs targeting key audiences & including media, industry influencers, and other priority health system stakeholders  in the many kinds of value and innovation Optum/OptumInsight brings to the health system
  • Collaborate daily with fellow Optum communications leaders and teammates to advance the broader Optum reputation, brand awareness and marketplace value story
  • Ensure strong coordination and message consistency across all audiences, internal and external
  • Support business leaders and partners with consistent and timely counsel, communications coaching and message development
  • Consistently establish, cultivate and manage productive relationships with priority news media
  • Develop, edit and ensure quality of external communications materials, including news releases, key message, Q&As, talking points, pitch notes, backgrounders, speeches and presentations
  • Strategically monitor and evaluate marketplace trends and issues of relevance to the business, and proactively develop strategies to advance and protect the company’s reputation
  • Take point on developing and managing response to media issues and / or crises, in close collaboration with business leadership
  • Build and manage productive relationships with internal stakeholders and partners beyond the OptumInsight team, including key functional, Marketing and Government Affairs partners across Optum and UnitedHealth Group
  • Effectively motivate, direct and provide strong mentorship to communications team

 

 

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations
  • 10 years of  steadily increasing communications responsibilities in a healthcare and / or technology role, preferably with private sector experience
  • Leadership or people management experience
  • Project management experience
  • Comfortable working in a high energy, complex, and ever changing collaborative environment
