The Sr. Director of State Government Affairs will lead and execute the work of Depomed’s state government affairs activities across the nation as an individual contributor for now. This role will serve as the company’s registered lobbyist in key states, when necessary, hire contract lobbyists, when necessary, and be responsible for all the company’s government relations, public policy strategy, and advocacy related activities at the state level throughout the U.S. This position can be field-based or headquarter-based in Newark, CA.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
•Lobbying – spending time in priority states meeting with key legislators and developing relationships that can be accessed to benefit the company’s objectives
•Building and leveraging relationships with governors and staff, and agency heads and other executive branch key leaders.
•Educating state policymakers on Depomed as a responsible company, our products, and policy stances to build advocates
•Communicating personally with state policymakers in a professional, informed manner with respect to issues affecting Depomed
•Providing concise, comprehensive written and verbal updates to Depomed’s senior executive management.
•Articulating Depomed’s positions to influence legislators and others with authority to make decisions that affect the company using data, science, and facts as foundation for persuasion.
•Creating annual legislative and policy objectives in coordination with VP of Government Affairs to ensure alignment with corporate goals and tracking progress against goals.
•Managing contract lobbyists and sharing information, educating them on Depomed’s issues.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES
•Lead the implementation of corporate policy objectives throughout the states and build rapport and support for the Company and products.
Requirements EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
•Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a field such as health care administration, political science, public administration, public policy, or related field. Juris Doctor or other Advance degree preferred.
•10+ years of working in Government Affairs within the biopharmaceutical industry

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
•Comprehensive knowledge of state legislative issues affecting the biotech and pharmaceutical industries
•Comprehensive knowledge of state legislative and regulatory procedures
•Has sufficient stature, capacity, and relationships with state officials to bring strong credibility to Depomed or the ability to rapidly build such relationships.
•Proven record of accomplishments in complex legislative environment.
•Superior verbal and written communications skills, including ability to facilitate trust and develop strong relationships with diverse individuals/groups.
•Possesses an affinity for processing complex information and summarizing it concisely in writing and/or verbally in a highly professional manner in a time-sensitive environment.
•Ability to make critical business decisions independently, under severe time pressure in a highly dynamic environment. As this position is field-based, it requires a high level of autonomy with minimal day-to-day supervisory support of tactics. The successful candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter.
•Ability to organize strategy independently and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously under limited daily oversight.
•Innate ability to comprehend and predict critical, complex issues; rapidly formulate strategy; execute plan; and communicate regularly and concisely to appropriate Depomed management.
•Significant travel well over 50% of time; this position can be based at Depomed HQ or field-based.
