Senior Media Manager, Northeast Region
The primary purpose of this position is to increase NFIB’s visibility, name recognition, and influence through earned media coverage in state and local news outlets (print, television, radio, online) in the Northeast region of the country. The individual in this position is a spokesperson for the organization and is responsible for communicating NFIB’s work and mission to the general public and media. In addition, the Senior Media Manager, Northeast will be expected to regularly create content that provides value for our members and message, such as press releases, op-eds, talking points and strategic media advice. Such content allows the organization to increase its visibility and raise brand awareness and communicate with reporters and other members of the media and influencers. The Senior Media Manager, Northeast will work closely in conjunction with the NFIB national communications team based in Washington, D.C. This individual will also be expected to provide editorial support as needed to NFIB State Government Relations and Grassroots.
Handle media inquiries and excel in media relations by taking inquiries from the press, answering questions, providing information, on-the-record or on-background comments and/or arranging interviews with NFIB State Directors or other key small business owners.
Develop and maintain relationships with reporters in assigned states; write and distribute press releases, statements and op-eds, pitch stories about NFIB, NFIB members and small business issues. Think and act creatively about how NFIB and our members can gain more prominence in the press.
Serve as a press secretary to assigned NFIB State Directors and provide strategic media relations and communications counsel.
Edit and, if necessary, create content that is clear, conforms to NFIB style and overall messaging, and motivates NFIB members to take action.
Consistent media monitoring, including Print/TV/Radio/Online outlets in your region; and ensuring key stakeholders are informed of small business issues in your states.
Participate in regular sessions with the NFIB national communications team, other Senior Media Managers, and other necessary departments to develop plans and strategies to replicate best practices and to support state and media initiatives.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, political science or related field.
Five (5) to Seven (7) years related work experience in communications with increasing responsibility and demonstrated success in media relations. Previous media relationships and on-the-record experience required.
Must be able to build and maintain relationships with targeted reporters and media outlets. Must possess demonstrated knowledge of the political/policy process and issues related to small business.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills with outstanding journalistic writing, grammar, editing or copy-editing abilities. Must be able to work well under deadline pressure.
Strong leadership skills and ability to work well with others in high pressure situations.
Position can be based in any Northeastern state or in the NFIB’s Washington D.C. office.
