Position Summary

The Sr. Public Policy Associate role at United Philanthropy Forum presents an exciting opportunity for a dedicated professional with a solid understanding of public policy communications and an avid interest in grassroots advocacy. The ideal candidate has a proven track record for developing and executing public policy-related communications plans, assisting with grassroots engagement, and a keen understanding of the advocacy process.

 

Reporting to the Senior Director of Public Policy, the Sr. Public Policy Associate is proactive member of the Forum Public Policy team, assisting with the development and marketing of high-quality tools, events, and processes to cultivate Forum members’ public policy capacity and inform various audiences about the Forum’s public policy work. This will include assisting with the development of education, communications, marketing and advocacy strategies for target audiences to increase the Forum’s reach and influence in public policy and advocacy. This is a full-time, exempt position and is open to remote candidates.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement and Grassroots Mobilization

  • Help implement and manage Forum’s advocacy network to educate and mobilize PSOs and the broader philanthropic sector on Forum’s public policy goals.
  • Align Forum’s mobilization strategies with general advocacy best-practices for nonprofits and associations.
  • Assist Senior Director with managing the Forum’s Public Policy Peer Community, which provides opportunities for members with public policy and government relations responsibilities to connect, learn and share with their colleagues through a listserv, regular meetings and an in-person convening at the Forum’s annual conference.
  • Strategically engage in the lead-up and roll-out of advocacy campaigns.
  • Help design and fully implement public policy education programs and webinars for Forum members and other stakeholders.
  • Build trusted relationships with Forum’s key public policy partners.
  • Provide strategic advice on key public policy initiatives to the Senior Director and other staff.
  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of Forum policy positions and the legislative and regulatory issues affecting the nonprofit and philanthropic community. 
  • Participate in racial equity and inclusion planning with policy team. 

Public Policy Communications

  • Assist with the development and execution of Forum’s public policy communications plan, including identification and tracking of key performance indicators to ensure the Forum reaches priority policy audiences in timely and relevant ways to deepen our reputation and influence.
  • Establish and execute an editorial calendar for public policy communications to advance clear and compelling priorities for communications products, based on defined criteria for achieving policy influence.
  • Write the Forum’s bi-weekly Public Policy Update and periodic Policy Alerts for members and contribute to policy updates for the Forum’s general member newsletter.
  • Distill complex policy jargon into compelling messages for target audiences and platforms.
  • Work with Senior Director to develop resources for outreach and engagement opportunities, including toolkits, social media, talking points, op-eds, webinars, etc.
  • Coordinate communications on issues across policy and communications staff.
  • Support writing, analyzing, and synthesizing proposals, information and reports for Forum policy and advocacy activities.
  • Assist with the development and manage long-term communication strategy, including content for Forum’s public policy webpages, executing and managing public policy social media campaigns, and developing press releases. 

 

Salary

The salary range for this position is $62,000 – $72,000, commensurate with experience, with a competitive benefits package including 100% employer paid health coverage and a retirement plan.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and up to 4 years of full-time work experience in policy, advocacy or an equivalent combination of education & experience. 
  • Experience working on community organizing, member outreach, government relations or similar fields. 
  • Demonstrated success developing and advancing advocacy mobilization strategies or issue-based campaigns. 
  • Experience executing communications for a large movement or membership-based organization (use of email, newsletters, social media, podcasts, etc.). 
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills. 
  • Ability to create and implement audience-specific engagement and cultivation plans. 
  • Strong anticipatory and organizational skills, including the ability to juggle multiple competing tasks.
  • Proficiency in the use of e-mail marketing, CRM and online advocacy technology, such as Pardot, Salesforce and Phone2Action/VoterVoice preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, including excellent customer-orientation.
  • Strong motivation to learn and contribute with a flexible approach and comfort with ambiguity.
  • Attention to detail and ability to take ownership of projects, but also ask for help when needed.
  • Deep interest in learning about advocacy, government relations, nonprofit and philanthropic policy issues, and the nonprofit and philanthropic community.
