State Government Affairs and Advocacy Manager

Council for Interior Design Qualification, Inc.

The Council for Interior Design Qualification, Inc. is seeking a State Government Affairs and Advocacy Manager. This position is responsible for supporting and advancing CIDQ’s policy agenda at the state/provincial level and representing CIDQ with external committees and alliances. This role will monitor legislation, analyze threats, generate resources that effectively convey the nature/value of the NCIDQ Exam for legislative audiences, and develop effective strategies to support members in educating policy makers on the importance of interior design regulation. This person would also be the representative to a multi-disciplinary group focused on increasing public understanding of the need for “reasonable regulation” of complex design professions. In support of these activities, this position provides exemplary customer service to members, candidates, certificate holders, and other stakeholders. The State Government Affairs and Advocacy Manager is also responsible for researching, analyzing, and coordinating advocacy content for internal and external communications.

About the Organization

The Council for Interior Design Qualification (CIDQ) is an association of state and provincial licensure boards that regulate the profession in those jurisdictions. Currently, the profession of interior design is regulated through licensure, certification, or registration in 27 U.S. states, 2 U.S. territories and all Canadian provinces. CIDQ supports regulation by providing a uniform professional examination that ensures that those earning the NCIDQ Certificate possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to practice in a way that protects the public’s health, safety, and welfare. CIDQ also maintains a record of certificants’ education, work experience, and examination status that supports its member boards in the pursuit of regulatory excellence and its certificate holders in gaining legal recognition across jurisdictions.

Essential Duties:

· Research and analyze current state statutes, proposed legislation, as well as policy, regulatory, and business trends on the state and local level on behalf of state boards

· Develop reports, briefs, state statutory matrices, position papers, as well as other written or digital materials

· Update and maintain a repository of information and resources (e.g., statistics, background on past activity, new research, case studies, articles, etc.) on issue and program areas

· Plan, manage, and execute, external engagement, various advocacy-related meetings, events and task forces

· Cultivate and maintain relationships with various coalition partners as well as CIDQ volunteers and leadership

· Manage advocacy related task groups and/or committees

· Be an ambassador with internal and external stakeholders, and other groups as assigned

· Represent CIDQ interests with industry groups and coalitions

· Coordinate with external coalitions and other organizations as appropriate and/or assigned

· Draft and edit articles for CIDQ communication channels

· Work with the stakeholder engagement and marketing lead to bring attention to state related issues

· Develop presentations for CIDQ members and leadership

· Assist with managing the administration of related meetings, conference calls, webinars, group discussion forum, and other events as assigned

· Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Training and Experience:

  • Experience in state policy arena required
  • Ability to perform legal and legislative research and analysis required
  • Working knowledge of interior design and the design and construction industry preferred
  • Ability to learn new and complicated concepts quickly and convey them to others required
  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment, coordinating and communicating with colleagues, conveying ideas with tact and diplomacy, and resolving problems collaboratively
  • Excellent analytical abilities required
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Experience with member services required
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities and responsibilities
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Sound judgment and initiative to work independently is a must
  • Commitment to produce excellent work and meet required deadlines
  • Experience writing, editing, and producing articles, reports, manuals, correspondence, and other advocacy materials
  • Ability to be proactive and operate independently with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, etc.), Westlaw, state tracking services, and social media

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy or related field
  • Minimum of five years supervisory experience in in public policy with proven experience in legislative, regulatory, and political processes
  • Association experience and interior design knowledge is a plus

  • Ability to actively listen and convey information, verbally and in writing, to staff, members, candidates, licensees, consultants, and other stakeholders
  • Strong sense of emotional intelligence and ability to navigate different work groups and collateral organizations deftly as well as to provide support to membership
  • Contribute to team processes and outcomes in a collaborative, constructive, and productive fashion
  • Think and act with discipline on a consistent basis
  • Work effectively and efficiently without close supervision
  • Efficiently use Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and other productivity enhancing tools.
