Strategic Communications Manager
The International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a Strategic Communications Manager (Communications & Marketing Manager) to lead the center’s Communications and Advocacy strategic vision across several high-profile international immunization projects. IVAC offers a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary work to support communications and immunization advocacy across a variety of public health disciplines, including infectious diseases, epidemiology, health economics, behavioral science, training and capacity-building, and scientific communication.
The Strategic Communications Manager who will be a strong conceptual and strategic thinker and who will work closely with colleagues at IVAC and across our global network to design and implement an international communications and advocacy strategy in collaboration with IVAC leadership, research teams, and other stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with excellent communication skills, who brings experience in both an academic research setting and with a variety of partners in global public health. This role will focus on leading efforts to promote and disseminate IVAC’s work and supporting a team of accomplished public health researchers to communicate the value of immunization to a variety of international audiences and stakeholders.
The incumbent should be comfortable developing and submitting grants and other funding proposals, managing a team, navigating institutional and partner requirements, and developing and implementing a comprehensive organizational communications strategy. This individual will have a leadership role with opportunities to develop and submit grant proposals and collaborate with investigators across IVAC’s portfolio of grant-funded communications and advocacy projects. IVAC has a strong presence as a leading resource for scientific communication and advocacy, and the ideal candidate will have an interest in developing new and innovative approaches to communicating the value of vaccines and promoting IVAC’s work.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Active participation in the development of the center’s vision and strategy for communicating the value of vaccines. This position will serve on IVAC’s leadership team and report to IVAC’s Executive Director and Deputy Director.
- Envision, develop, and implement an effective and comprehensive long-term communications strategy with multiple internal and external partners.
- Oversee IVAC media relations and external engagement, including proactive outreach to media, partners, funders, and other immunization stakeholders and oversee IVAC engagement events (press briefings, webinars, conference events).
- Advise IVAC investigators on communication strategies and activities and broad advocacy approaches for their projects.
- Communicate scientific evidence to a variety of stakeholders (media, funders, policymakers, in-country advocates, academic communities, and the general public) through multiple channels: social media campaigns, toolkits, blog posts, op-eds/columns, newsletters, reports, and manuscripts.
- Represent IVAC at external facing events while engaging with partner organizations, government officials, academics, advocates, and others in the policy community.
- Develop, manage, and implement the communications budget, contracts, and vendors for relevant projects and the center.
- Oversee and manage IVAC’s external-facing digital products (IVAC website, social media accounts, MailChimp newsletters).
- Lead efforts to assess the impact and success of IVAC’s communications and advocacy strategies.
- Supervise a small team of communications specialists and students and regularly collaborate with team members at all levels of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
- At least 5 years relevant experience designing and implementing communications strategies and activities on behalf of an organization or research center, leading projects related to international public health, or in a management/leadership role in an organization, including supervisory experience
- Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

- Experience developing and implementing a strategic communications plan in a complex organization.
- Experience working on international public health issues, such as immunization, health equity, infectious diseases, or maternal/child health.
- Experience with overseeing multimedia production including graphics, print publications and reports, videos, and infographics.
- Experience managing an organization’s digital presence (WordPress or other CMS, social media campaigns, data visualization).
- Experience working in communications in an academic public health setting.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- A record of successfully envisioning, developing, and implementing an effective and comprehensive long-term communications strategy with multiple internal and external partners.
- Experience overseeing an organization’s external-facing branding, including marketing materials, website, media, social media accounts, and events.
- Track record of successfully placing written publications, pitches, or other communications deliverables (op-eds, reported articles, manuscripts, guest columns, publicity for reports or journal publications, etc.) and managing media relations on behalf of an organization or research center.
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau, R, or Python.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including public speaking.
- Experience with developing communications campaigns in support of academic projects.
- Experience developing grant proposals and managing contracts.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a collaborative environment.
- 1-2 full-time staff.

Starting Salary Range: $69,830 – $95,960 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
