Impact Malaria Program

The US Presidents Malaria Initiative (PMI) Impact Malaria project is PMI’s flagship global malaria service delivery project, helping to improve the quality and increase the delivery of malaria diagnosis and treatment services in up to 27 countries around the world. PMI Impact Malaria is a USAID contract hosted and led by PSI as the prime contractor.

 

PMI Impact Malaria works with national malaria control programs to help tackle challenges by:

  • Closing the gaps in malaria service delivery to get the right medicine, with the correct diagnosis, to patients in need, in the timeliest manner.
  • Unlocking the potential of key drug-based approaches, by helping countries to introduce, implement, and scale-up proven innovations to move countries forward in their elimination efforts, according to each country’s unique malaria situation.
  • Strengthening malaria health systems and the use of data for decision-making to link operational research and country-led dialogue with global technical leadership for the means of accelerating service delivery improvements and advancing key learnings.

The PMI Impact Malaria team is a results-focused, multi-disciplined and multi-cultured team, based out of Washington DC, working through PSI country offices as well as through our partners Jhpiego, MCDI and UCSF, in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

 

PSI is seeking an experienced, dynamic and innovation-driven Strategic Communications Manager to support PMI Impact Malaria’s efforts share of learning both internally and externally, to tell its story more broadly, and celebrate the success of investments in PMI Impact Malaria.

Your contribution

 

The Strategic Communications Manager is an integral member of the PMI Impact Malaria Team (IM) and will work with to fine-tune and implement the project’s communication strategy for both an internal and external audiences. This position will be filled by a highly competent communications professional with sophisticated decision-making abilities and a great attitude towards teamwork and collaboration. The Strategic Communications Manager is an excellent writer with the ability to handle technical and reporting documents as well as the ability to distill IM’s work and success into succinct success stories and blog posts The Strategic Communications Manager will provide guidance and coaching to IM team members to produce quality documents and social media posts. You will create, manage, and execute the IM Communications Calendar and corresponding outputs for both external and internal audiences. The Strategic Communications Manager will oversee the IM website and Flickr photo library and be the steward of IM’s Branding and Marking Strategy. The Strategic Communications Manager will directly manage the IM Communications Coordinator and partner with PSI’s External Relations Department to promote IM learnings and knowledge contributions, as well as liaise with PMI communications team to further the objectives of PMI through IM.  You will be open to constructive coaching to stretch and grow your skill set while bringing an important voice to the team that allows for others to grow through your advice and strategies.  The ideal candidate will have experience in global public health, specifically knowledge of malaria in Asia and Africa.

 

Tasks 

  • Serve as the primary communications lead and point person to proactively engage on all communications needs, including product development and dissemination that interfaces with branding and marking, malaria technical communications, knowledge management, thought leadership, and public education.
  • Fine-tune, implement and monitor the IM’s communication strategy to achieve IM project objectives, and, more broadly, PMI strategic objectives.
  • Work with the IM team to develop, manage, and execute the IM Communications Calendar, including key messaging and content to communicate IM key insights, contributions, and learnings through all phases of the project. This could include the production and dissemination of technical content such as technical briefs and guidance documents, case studies, project, and country briefs, organizing webinars and conferences, presentations, briefs and microsite copy; and materials such as fact sheets, videos, project blog posts, success stories, and other digital content.
  • Liaise with the PSI Malaria Department and PSI External Relations Department to identify opportunities to disseminate IM insights, learnings and contributions to key external stakeholders, implementers, decision-makers, and other external audiences.
  • Develop, manage, and implement the IM’s social media strategy, as part of the IM Communications Calendar, including IM’s website, Flicker photo library, blog posts, success stories, Twitter, and other social media channels.
  • Oversee IM’s website, including managing updates and functionality with web designers.
  • Manage content strategy for priority conferences, in conjunction with IM Technical Team, PSI Malaria Department and PSI External Relations Department. Provide support in reviewing abstract submissions and presentations as well as supporting teams in preparing for oral presentations, coordinating dry runs and offering tailored support as needed.
  • Oversee, identify, manage, and support internal learning dissemination, such as internal webinar series, global project meetings, and other channels such as regular mailings.
  • Responsible for adherence to IM Branding and Marking Plan across project outputs, both centrally and country led.
  • Develop, review, and edit content for IM core deliverables, including formatting as necessary, to produce high quality documents.
  • Participate in regular IM technical meetings to keep up to date on project progress and identify topics for dissemination.
  • Build the capacity of IM in-country teams to capture, generate, and write stories from the field.
  • Manage media contacts and vendors (including photographers, videographers, graphic designers, etc.) to develop social media graphics, a comprehensive photo library, multimedia products, and other educational materials.
  • Update editorial style guide to reflect changes in best practices relevant to IM’s work.
  • Provide general writing, editing, and research support and capacity building, as needed.
  • Supervise IM’s full time Communications Coordinator, overseeing her training, development, and day-to-day work.
  • Travel internationally to conduct trainings for IM country teams and partners on storytelling, message creation, annual communications planning to align with IM and PSI’s strategic objectives.

The Basics:

  • Experience in global public health or international development, with knowledge of malaria in Asia and Africa highly preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, advocacy and policy or related field such as Journalism, English or one where demonstrated expertise in writing is required.
  • A minimum of 7 years working in communications, preferably with PR or marketing agency experience
  • 1+ years of experience mentoring or managing junior staff positions preferred.
  • Must have excellent writing abilities and experience crafting messages for external audiences in English.
  • Has experience managing websites, blogs, crafting newsletters, writing and editing social media, developing content for corporate magazines, fact sheets, and other external materials.
  • Extreme attention to detail with an ability to catch errors and grammatical mistakes.
  • Experience managing meetings and planning editorial calendars and communications workstreams
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Office 365.
  • Experience working with large, multinational, and intercultural teams. International work experience desired.
  • Able to juggle multiple competing deadlines without getting flustered and with a sense of humor.
  • Must be authorized to work in USA. PSI will not consider work visa sponsorship for this position.
  • References will be required.
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a background check.
