  1. Purpose:
    The Sustainability Analyst (SA) plays a key role within the Global Citizenship (GC) organization, supporting key elements of IP’s Vision 2030 strategy to improve our environmental footprint and promote the long term sustainability of natural capital and IP’s value chain. The SA provides analytical and strategic support for IP’s Sustainable Operations enterprise strategy, especially Decarbonization and Water Stewardship, and also supports key elements of IP’s Responsible Sourcing strategy. The SA will support broader efforts to align the company’s sustainability efforts with business objectives and stakeholder expectations (ie, customers, investors, suppliers, ENGOs, etc), as well as strategic partnerships linked to IP Vision 2030. Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) reporting will be a key responsibility.
  2. Key Accountabilities:
  • Manage ESG reporting
    • Lead annual ESG reporting (ie, CDP-Climate, CDP-Water, relevant GC Report sections)
    • Support integration of emerging climate-risk standards into IP reporting (ie, TCFD, SASB)
    • Support internal ESG data management (liaise with EHS & other functions)
    • Support customer/stakeholder surveys & data requests
    • Conduct ongoing ESG ratings/aggregator scores & methods reviews, seeking continuous improvement in IP scores (ie, MSCI, Sustainalytics, Bloomberg ESG, etc)
  • Support Sustainable Operations strategy implementation under IP Vision 2030
    • Decarbonization
      1. Serve as subject matter expert on decarbonization frameworks and initiatives (ie, Science-Based Targets Initiative, GHG Protocol, etc)
      2. Support development of Scope 3 strategy & targets
      3. Support capital & non-capital initiatives with key IP stakeholders (Scopes 1  & 2)
    • Water Stewardship
      1. Provide technical and analytical support for water use reduction initiatives (capital & non-capital), as well as supporting processes (ie, Context-Based Water Mgt Plans, Facilities Water Risk Assessments, data management)
  • Support Responsible Sourcing strategy aligned with IP Vision 2030
    • Liaise with Global Sourcing, Supply Chain, and Legal/Compliance functions on key activities including supplier assessments, buyer training, and reporting
  • The position will be based in Memphis, TN and 10% travel is expected

  • Volatile and quickly-moving legislative/regulatory action at different levels of government on carbon, water (use & quality), and related impact areas
  • Rigorous market-driven demands on transparency, lack of clarity around certifications & standards, scrutiny of data behind customer marketing claims
  • Increasing societal expectations re: stakeholder capitalism & triple bottom line operations: customers, investors, employees, NGOs
  • The work itself, e.g., problems, opportunities, change:
    • Integrating sustainability into everything we do
      • Ensuring key internal stakeholders and all IP employees understand, own, and deliver on IP Vision 2030
      • Navigating complex internal systems to align them towards IP Vision 2030 objectives
    • Inherent challenges of long-term, environmental/socially-oriented work within a risk-averse, capital-constrained B2B company (ie, making/defending the “business case”)

Skills and Experience:

  • College degree in Business, Sustainability, Natural Resource Management, or related field. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Experience working in a forest products manufacturing/sustainability or similar corporate context.
  • Strong analytical skills (advanced Excel at minimum)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities and ability to lead change across complex organizations; Manufacturing Excellence/LEAN certification preferred
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects from vision to implementation
  • Good understanding of global sustainability issues, including the complementary, overlapping, and conflicting sustainability positions of IP’s various stakeholders
  • Strong business acumen; understand each business unit’s strategic and financial objectives and ensure support of those objectives; understand how strategies and tactics work in the marketplace and in government
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and work with diverse stakeholders (e.g., corporate leadership, operations teams, technical experts, counterparts from peer companies and customers, third party associations)

Key external stakeholders include: IP customers and strategic partners including ENGO’s, investors, suppliers, non-profit organizations, industry associations, regulatory bodies, and other special interest groups

 

Key internal stakeholders include: Businesses-Mfg orgs, Global Technology, Capital COE, EHS, IT, Mfg Excellence, Government Relations, Legal/Compliance, Global Sourcing & Supply Chain, Fiber Supply, Communications, Employees at all levels (corporate & facility-based)

 

Key internal customers include: Sales & Marketing, Investor Relations, Employees at all levels (corporate & facility-based)
