The University Relations Director is accountable for leading the development and strategy for communications and marketing activities related to internal and external stakeholders at Ohio State as well as working with cross-functional teams to implement a range of marketing, communications and outreach activities that promote and amplify the university’s highest priorities and initiatives as well as emerging needs with our community. This role serves as a critical liaison across university departments, offices and leaders to coordinate and create a centralized line of sight to events, outreach activities and initiatives with the goal of optimizing the reach and effectiveness of these activities.

 

This role will be jointly responsible for leading and managing a matrixed operational pod within the Office of Marketing and Communications, comprised of cross-functional team members and subject matter experts (SMEs) tapped from the OMC, other central offices, colleges/units and from across the enterprise to contribute to planning, executing and scaling activities across the enterprise and creating awareness for Ohio State’s efforts and priorities within the community. Employees contributing to the matrixed pod will be accountable to the University Relations Director for all work assigned and executed within this position’s scope of leadership for the community priorities pod as well as for special projects that require immediate response or that will support the development and ongoing success of university and presidential priorities.

 

The University Relations Director will work closely with critical partners including Government Affairs, the Office of Academic Affairs and the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge as well as communications partner and senior leaders from around the university to develop and execute marketing and communications activities. This position will also provide leadership and focused support to identify and implement engagement activities for a wide array of audiences and emerging priorities to support both short and long-term needs. The role will serve as a key liaison within the OMC and across the enterprise to drive a comprehensive response and plan for presidential and university priorities that focus on the university’s land-grant mission with service to the state, nation and world as a key driving factor for strategy and implementation of engagement activities.

 

The role is a unique blend of using a public affairs lens to create marketing and communications activities that result in greater understanding and awareness of the universities priorities and initiatives with various community stakeholders. While not directly responsible for media relations or social media, this position will require the ability to rely on solid media relations and social media background to work across the university to bring together public affairs, executive communications, media and public relations, brand experience, audience activation and other areas of expertise to develop innovative opportunities that proactively engage internal and external stakeholders. The role will build partnerships at all levels within the enterprise, while serving as a steward for delivering thoughtful, audience-centric experiences consistent with the Ohio State brand in a way that advances the university’s vision to be the absolute model 21st century land-grant institution.

 

Required Qualifications:

Required: Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, public relations, a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Minimum six (6) years of experience managing communications or public affairs for a CEO, president, or senior university, elected, or corporate official; Three to five (3 – 5) years’ experience developing and implementing communications strategy for issues or project-based priorities involving content creation, relationship building, social media and onsite event execution; ability to demonstrate significant proficiency at developing strategy for multiple priorities or projects, such as for city council members or non-profit or grassroots initiatives; exceptional attention to detail and commitment to excellence in work; occasional evening and weekend work required.

 

Desired Qualifications:

Master’s degree. Ten (10) or more years of experience managing communications or public affairs for a CEO, president, or senior university, elected, or corporate official; considerable knowledge of higher education issues and themes and an understanding of public policy issues strongly desired.

The Target Hiring Range for this position is $92,000 to $123,000
