Vice Chancellor for Government Relations and Advocacy

WittKieffer is proud to support The University of Pittsburgh (“Pitt”) – one of the nation’s most distinguished institutions of higher learning – in its search for a seasoned executive to lead its newly bolstered Office of Government Relations and Advocacy. The vice chancellor for government relations and advocacy will provide leadership in developing and executing a comprehensive, multifaceted engagement and advocacy strategy in support of securing and sustaining support for Pitt’s policy priorities. Reporting to Pitt’s Chancellor, the position will fill a core strategic role for the institution and be responsible for local, state and federal government relations, related policy activities, and grassroots/grasstops advocacy mobilization.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess a wealth of experience working for or in organizations that influence public policy makers and effectively designing and executing advocacy strategies that embrace a full suite of communication tools and channels – including lobbying, media relations, coalition building, and social media. This executive will bring finely tuned “street smarts” about the local, federal and state governmental decision-making processes, players and politics. Finally, this individual will have a keen appreciation for the mission of a major research university and the work of navigating stakeholder needs and expectations to build and sustain relevance and credibility.

Founded in 1787, Pitt is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. It is a member of the Association of American Universities and serves over 9,000 graduate and 25,000 undergraduate students through 16 graduate, professional, and undergraduate schools. It operates five campuses—all in Pennsylvania—including its flagship campus in Pittsburgh and four regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville.

Pitt regularly appears in the top echelon of national and global university rankings. In a recent U.S. News & World Report ranking, the university earned recognition as the 43rd-best university in the world. In addition: Pitt currently ranks 15th in the nation in terms of annual research and development expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation, and the Wall Street Journal has consistently ranked Pitt as the number 1 public university in the Northeastern United States.
