Job Description:

ABA is seeking a Vice President to lead an association-wide advocacy campaign ensuring a level playing field between banks and credit unions.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead an association-wide advocacy campaign to ensure a level playing field between banks and credit unions. This includes directing ABA’s positioning and working collaboratively with legislative affairs, regulatory policy, communications, grassroots, and the Office of the Chief Economist.
  • Monitor legislative (federal and state), regulatory, legal, and market developments that inappropriately expand CUs’ mission beyond their original scope and devise and execute ABA’s strategic response.
  • Raise awareness among ABA membership of recent credit union developments and lead ABA’s response.  This can include:
    • Briefing state banker associations
    • Drafting comment letters
    • Drafting statements for the record
    • Drafting or editing written communications, including op-eds, tweets, articles, and advertisements
    • Giving speeches
    • Developing and presenting other written and verbal communications.
  • Manage third party relationships that support ABA’s advocacy efforts.
  • Develop and maintain ABA member working group to inform ABA advocacy.
  • Represent the banking industry on matters related to credit unions before Congress and the NCUA.
  • Support other ABA strategic priorities and perform other duties as needed.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, government, communications, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 12 years’ experience working within the credit union policy space i.e., NCUA, credit union trade association, credit union, or Capitol Hill experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Federal Credit Union Act and related credit union laws and regulations.
  • Ability and experience developing and driving multi-faceted advocacy campaigns, including coalition building and member management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to balance competing interests and priorities.
  • Ability to partner with ABA’s communications team to successfully frame public messaging around credit union issues to include, drafting public statements, engaging with media, and developing social media content.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to drive consensus.
  • Strong project management skills including, successfully managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to travel (20-50%).
