The National Grocers Association (NGA) is the national trade association for America’s 21,500 independent community grocers. Independent community grocers are at the heart of local communities and the U.S. economy, where they provide jobs and boost tax revenue while bringing choice, convenience and value to hard-working Americans. NGA advocates for continued growth and innovation of the field and ensuring a level playing field. 


The National Grocers Association Government Relations department consists of 3 full-time lobbyists and a Manager. We exclusively lobby on federal issues across a range of issues including taxes, food and nutrition policy, antitrust, payments/financial services, pharmacy, labor and employment, pandemic relief, and more. As a membership-driven organization, the government relations team works heavily with NGA’s Board, Committees, Share Groups and association members through education, feedback, and strategic grassroots engagement. 


Position Summary


NGA is searching for an energetic and ambitious individual to help lead NGA’s Government Relations team. The VP will oversee NGA’s lobbying and political team and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the association’s government relations activities while collaborating with the CEO and SVP on strategy.    The VP will report to NGA’s SVP of Gov’t Relations. The ideal candidate has a background in government or government relations with a track-record of success in managing a team, forming and executing policy strategies, and managing multiple projects simultaneously. 




  • Identify, monitor, and report internally and to NGA membership on legislative and regulatory issues
  • Advocate NGA’s policy priorities before Congress and the Executive Branch and develop strategic engagement activities for NGA member companies.
  • Represent NGA in industry meetings and coalitions; attend fundraisers
  • Support NGA’s grassroots advocacy program and Political Action Committee efforts
  • Direct lobbying issue portfolio including food and nutrition policy
  • Manage Government Relations presence at NGA events including annual trade Show, fly-ins, conferences, and meetings. 
  • Lead NGA’s Government Relations Committee activities, including calls, meetings and strategic engagement


Skills and Experience


  • Strong understanding of federal legislative and regulatory process
  • 6+ years of experience on the Hill, Executive Branch, and/or in government affairs 
  • Management experience required
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask on simultaneous projects
  • Team player with proven ability to collaborate with others on projects
  • Demonstrable strategic acumen in solving policy challenges
  • Knowledge and experience in food and nutrition preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Advance degree preferred
