The National Grocers Association (NGA) is the national trade association for America’s 21,500 independent community grocers. NGA members include retail and wholesale grocers located in every congressional district across the country, as well as state grocers’ associations, manufacturers and service suppliers.

The NGA Government Relations department consists of 3 full-time lobbyists and support staff. We exclusively lobby on federal issues across a range of policies, including food safety, nutrition, antitrust, payments, labor and employment, tax, privacy, among others. The GR department is supported by the NGA Grocers Political Action Committee and NGA’s grassroots programs.

Position Summary

NGA is searching for an energetic and ambitious individual to manage NGA’s Government Relations departmental activities and programs, lobby on NGA federal issue priorities, and oversee NGA’s PAC and grassroots programs. The VP will report to NGA’s SVP of Gov’t Relations. The ideal candidate has a policy background on general business issues (taxes, labor, regulation) and PAC fundraising or political campaign experience. Experience managing a team is a plus.


  • Identify, monitor, and report internally and to NGA membership on legislative and regulatory issues
  • Advocate NGA’s policy priorities before Congress and the executive branch and develop strategic engagement for NGA member companies
  • Represent NGA in industry meetings and coalitions; attend and host fundraisers
  • Direct NGA’s grassroots advocacy program (Congressional store tours and warehouse visits)
  • Manages NGA’s PAC including planning and executing fundraising events and initiatives, programs for PAC authorized NGA members (events, webinars, newsletters), recommending candidate expenditures, FEC compliance
  • Direct policy portfolio of business community issues including labor and employment, tax policy, supply chains, privacy and other policy issues as assigned
  • Direct NGA Government Relations activities at various NGA and industry events (trade show, Congressional fly-in, conferences, meetings, etc.)
  • Leads cross-functional association engagement of Government Relations department, including internal and external marketing and communications, event planning, and sales and fundraising
  • Give speeches and presentations on political climate and implications for grocery industry

 Skills and Experience

  • Strong understanding of federal legislative and regulatory process
  • 6+ years of experience fundraising,  campaigns, government, and/or government relations
  • Experience with tax, labor, regulations and general business community issues
  • Strong political expertise and proven knowledge of federal campaigns, candidates, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  •  Ability to multitask on simultaneous projects
  • Team player with proven ability to collaborate on other projects
  • Demonstrable strategic acumen in solving policy challenges
  • Management experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Advanced degree preferred
