The Association of American Publishers (“AAP”) seeks a talented individual to join its team as Vice President, Public Policy. The position is based in Washington, DC, and reports directly to the President and CEO.

AAP is at the forefront of a wide range of legal and public policy issues that drive progress in the twenty-first century. Priorities include modern copyright protections, a transparent online marketplace, freedom of expression, content integrity, sustainable business models, and public-private collaborations.  In addition to delivering high quality advocacy for its members, AAP coordinates and produces authoritative industry-wide information and statistics products.

The Vice President, Public Policy, will have primary responsibility for leading AAP’s strategic agenda for scholarly and professional publishing, as well as ample integration into policy issues that affect all publishing sectors and the immeasurable role of publishing and research integrity in society. The position will work closely with a membership of global companies, scientific societies, and professional associations that have developed the world’s most celebrated scholarly journals and created the infrastructure to peer review and publish millions of articles annually. Collectively, AAP’s members publish journals covering nearly every academic and professional field in science, technology, medicine, social sciences, and the humanities.

The incumbent will work on a range of legislative and regulatory issues facing the scholarly publishing industry, with a strong focus on securing a policy framework that enables AAP’s members to continue making critical investments to produce and disseminate high-quality content that supports scientific integrity and furthers the scientific progress and intellectual advancements that are at the core of the research enterprise.


The ideal candidate will be a rigorous thinker who has the training to interpret complex regulatory and legislative developments and create and execute appropriately nuanced objectives. The ability to translate policy and/or technical expertise into strategies, collaborations, and outcomes is essential.

Applicants for the position should have the following minimum credentials:

·        Prior experience in legislative and regulatory policy (e.g., through government public service on the Hill or in the Executive Branch, or through private sector public policy or government relations work) and/or academic publishing.

·        Superior academic credentials: at minimum, a bachelor’s degree. Graduate degree a plus.

·        Exceptional writing and speaking abilities.

·        Attention to detail and accuracy in all work product.

·        Relationship building, including experience leading or working with coalitions of diverse stakeholders on shared policy objectives.

·        Experience leading or working within a team.

·        Ability to manage and direct polished, public facing content.

·        Superior judgement and discretion.
