Vice President/Sr. Vice President, Advocacy & Public Affairs
Reporting to the President and serving as an integral member of ISRI’s senior management team, the Vice President (VP) of Advocacy & Public Affairs is responsible for providing overall leadership on ISRI’s advocacy and public affairs efforts. This includes responsibility for development and implementation of an integrated strategy – across all levels of government and groups of stakeholders – for advancing ISRI’s agenda and priorities.
- Develops ISRI’s political strategies and priorities in pursuit of an effectively targeted agenda on behalf of the industry across federal, state and local, and international arenas.
- Oversee all advocacy activities and initiatives on the federal, state and local, and international levels, including communicating key advocacy messages to generate support among policy makers, staff, allied organizations and other appropriate stakeholders.
- Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders in the policy community, including but not limited to other associations, NGOs, government officials, and issue coalitions.
- Defines the strategic focus, work priorities, and budget for the department, and ensures that these align with the organization’s overall strategic goals and priorities.
- Monitors legislative, political and regulatory developments impacting ISRI members and ensures members are updated about developments; serves as the lead point of contact on all such issues.
- Serves as an external spokesperson on ISRI’s policy initiatives, while also serving as a spokesperson for ISRI’s advocacy and public affairs efforts to the membership.
- Develops programs in close collaboration with key internal partners across ISRI, as well as with government institutions, media and other critical stakeholders
- Ensures that all initiatives contribute to ISRI’s mandate and lead to the creation of environmental, social and economic value for ISRI’s members and the communities in which ISRI’s members operate;
- Serves as the subject matter expert on all things related to the recycling industry and the associated value chain and provides insight to ISRI and its members.
- Provides timely, continual and informative analysis and content to members regarding relevant policy developments to gain support for advocacy efforts.
- Regularly communicates with key thought leaders to ensure timely identification and understanding of current and future issues that might impact ISRI and/or its members, and communicating that information back to ISRI staff and members.
- Ensures the production of high-quality verbal and written comments on draft policies, rules and plans, and congressional testimony.
- Builds support for ISRI’s priorities in Congress and the Executive Branch, as well as with individuals and groups who are or ought to be supportive of recycling.
- Assists in the coordination of the annual legislative fly-in, Hill Days and member trainings to further ISRI’s public policy priorities.
- Activates and involves members on legislative and regulatory advocacy efforts.
- Serves as liaison to ISRI’s Government Affairs Committee.
- Facilitates the development of teams and coalitions to accomplish related goals.
- Collaborates closely with staff across all departments within ISRI to promote teamwork and leveraging of expertise and experience from all parts of the association.
- Assists in development of an annual PAC plan; increases political involvement and encourages PAC participation
- Develops and manages ISRI’s advocacy team to support the development and execution of ISRI’s agenda and overall goals and priorities. As part of this effort, the VP: o promotes a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality, o mentors and develops staff, o establishes and monitors staff performance and development goals, including assigning accountabilities, setting objectives, and establishing priorities, and o encourages the team work cooperatively and proactively across all ISRI departments.

- Works as a member of the senior management team to further ISRI’s goals, vision and mission.
- Proven track record of translating strategic thinking into action plans and output
- Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
- Superior management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
- Demonstrated success in gaining the credibility and respect of high-performing Board of Directors
- Results oriented
- Proven ability to anticipate future needs and make decisions in a changing environment
- Relationships with congressional members (including more than staff) and access to the directors or senior personnel of key government agencies
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years of experience in Washington as a government executive, a Congressional staffer in a senior position, or senior position in a relevant government department, agency or business.
- Previous experience managing lobbyists
- Experience in bringing forth an advocacy campaign or program that results in a substantive agenda in the legislative process.
- Proven ability to provide strategic advice in advocacy programs
