The Vice President for State Advocacy and Outreach leads AAPA’s state advocacy program and is responsible for AAPA’s strategic outreach at the state level and with constituent organizations. The Vice President develops and directs the Academy’s state legislative and regulatory affairs program assuring that physician assistants (PAs) can practice at the top of their education and experience by assuring excellence in laws and regulations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and US territories. In addition, the Vice President oversees and assures AAPA’s affiliation with and services to its constituent organizations which are comprised of 116 PA state chapters, specialty societies, special interest groups, federal service chapters, and caucuses.

The Vice President oversees a team of seven staff who serve as liaisons to the constituent organizations, as well as Governors, state legislators and state medical boards in their respective regions. The Vice President provides guidance and steps in as needed. In addition, the Vice President develops and maintains relationships with the Federation of State Medical Boards and the state government affairs staff of national and state physician, public health, and related organizations. The Vice President represents the profession at a variety of external events.

The Vice President is responsible for coordinating improvements in state laws that authorize PAs to practice and laws and regulations outside of the PA practice laws that impact the PA profession. The Vice President assures monitoring of legislation and regulations in all 50 states, identifies overarching trends and issues of concern, and then coordinates a response by either state PA organizations and/or AAPA and other stakeholders.

The Vice President coordinates AAPA’s affiliation and relationships with its constituent organizations, assuring that AAPA is the unified voice for the profession. This includes managing assistance and benefits for constituent organizations, and oversight of a targeted grant budget. 

Because this position may be exposed to sensitive and confidential information, the Vice President is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality that knowledge of such information warrants.


Senior Vice President, Advocacy and Government Relations


Staff of six directors and one assistant director and occasional temporary employees, interns and students.


  • Assures unrestricted practice for PAs by developing and implementing a state advocacy program for the Academy. Recommends tactics necessary to advance AAPA priorities in states and ensures proper execution of the approach. Able to adjust strategies as needed.
  • Working with staff team, analyzes and monitors legislative and regulatory activity at the state level. Synthesizes data from disparate states to inform a national plan.
  • Develops and implements grassroots/grasstops advocacy campaigns using the legislative action center, social media, and other strategies.
  • As directed by the AAPA Strategic Plan, coordinates a national program of affiliation with constituent organizations.
  • In coordination with Director, Constituent Organization and Outreach, initiates outreach efforts to assist constituent organizations to assure their viability and increase their capacity according to their identified priorities and needs (includes travel to provide on-site consultation and presentations, assistance with outreach and strategic planning to maximize effectiveness).
  • Familiarizes self with key reports and studies on the PA profession to further goals and ensures resource documents for use by communications, constituent organizations and individuals are consistently updated.
  • Responds to inquiries on state legislative and regulatory issues from government agencies, state and national organizations, constituent organizations, researchers, and individuals.
  • Enhances the awareness and profile of the Academy and PA profession through participation in workshops, attendance at state meetings, and speaking engagements among others.
  • Builds and expands alliance strategies and relationships with external stakeholders, particularly within the healthcare industry.
  • Reviews and edits the work of the state advocacy team, as well as work from communications and marketing when related to the states. Partners with communications team for earned and paid media opportunities. Spokesperson for state policy issues.
  • Reports regularly on state government activities through articles, correspondence and oral presentations.
  • Works closely with the federal and reimbursement teams on areas of mutual interest or concern.
  • Informs Academy staff and leadership of state legislative and regulatory issues and trends affecting PAs. Is a trustedadviser to AAPA members and leadership.
  • Ensures compliance with relevant state registration and lobbying disclosure laws.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • 8-10 years of progressively responsible professional experience with a proven record of accomplishments;
  • 5+ years of direct experience working with states with a major company or association, State legislator, or campaign or as a public servant in a relevant government department or agency;
  • Knowledge of healthcare issues at the national, state and provider level;
  • Strong support for the political goals and priorities of the AAPA required;
  • Proficient in grassroots mobilizing and coalition building, preferably in healthcare;
  • Experience with preparing and managing budgets, forecasting and strategic planning;
  • Ability to think strategically and provide vision to AAPA’s organizational planning;
  • Exceptional capacity for managing and leading people, including developing and empowering leaders, cultivating initiative, team-building, and positioning people to succeed;
  • Proven success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities, as well as ability to work with efficiency, flexibility and good humor;
  • Persuasive, with excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills;
  • Willing to travel and willing to attend evening and weekend meetings;
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
