Position Summary:

The VP of Public Policy and Advocacy leads and supports Nevada and the five California chapters (California Southland, Central, Northern California/Northern Nevada, Orange County and San Diego/Imperial) in their year-round advocacy program to achieve positive legislative, budgetary and regulatory changes on behalf of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias.  The VP is the statewide representative of the Alzheimer’s Association at the capitol in CA and serves as primary point person to the Governor’s Administration, State Legislature, key departments (including Aging, Health Care Services, Public Health and Social Services) and the broad health, aging and disability stakeholder community. In Nevada, the VP oversees the Policy Director and strategic directions for policy and advocacy in the State.


Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • An experienced policy and advocacy strategist to guide the activities of and/or serve as the designated state lead for California Government Relations.   Builds on and expands relationships with elected officials, State Departments and staff.  Actively takes part or leads strategic partnerships and projects with government departments and agencies.
  • Responsible for achieving state priority action objectives in the national Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) in the states of CA and NV.
  • Supervise Govt. Affairs director in CA and Advocacy manager staff in two regions within the State of California and the Policy Director in the State of Nevada.
  • Develop strategies and tactics to achieve results, including drafting legislation, budget and regulatory language; identifying key legislative champions and potential opponents; building coalitions; and adhering to deadlines.
  • Initiate, support, amend and/or defend public policies (legislative, regulatory or budget action) that support individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s or related dementias. Recommend official Association positions on proposed bills, budget language and regulatory changes.
  • Produce or approve letters of support/opposition on key legislation; testify in legislative and budget hearings; activate grassroots support for priorities
  • Advise on the development of annual advocacy engagements, including a State Lobby day and statewide advocacy activities.
  • Seek opportunities to increase visibility through paid and earned media including the development of collateral materials,
  • Manage the budgets for public policy in collaboration with two regions who will allocate funds for public policy.


  • Bachelor’s degree at a minimum
  • 7 to 10 years of experience in Government Relations

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Extensive knowledge of California state government processes and functions
  • Ability to represent the Alzheimer’s Association to external audiences, demonstrating nonpartisanship, sensitivity and inclusion
  • Sound judgment and political acumen
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Superior organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Office and strong personnel management experience
  • Ability to work independently with little direction
  • Adept at technology, including Microsoft Office, and the Google Suite
  • Frequent local and occasional out of town travel
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
