The Possible Zone (TPZ), a nonprofit organization, seeks a Vice President of Communications to oversee and implement TPZ’s internal and external communications activities.  The ideal candidate will have experience in written and digital communications, public affairs, event planning, and media relations, as well as a passion for closing the opportunity gap for young people. This will be a hybrid role based in Boston.


The Possible Zone is an afterschool program that uses entrepreneurship as a framework to close the skills and opportunities gap facing young people with untapped potential. We guide students through a dynamic curriculum, including hands-on work experience and individualized career planning, to develop the personal qualities that predict future professional success.

Working closely with the leadership team including the Executive Director, Chief Strategy & Advancement Officer, Chief Talent Officer, Chief Learning Officer and Chief Research and Evaluation Officer, the Vice President of Communications is responsible for overseeing and implementing The Possible Zone’s (TPZ) internal and external communications activities.  The successful candidate will support internal alignment and ongoing information-sharing amongst TPZ staff, guide external marketing efforts to build the TPZ brand and be a critical partner in ongoing thought leadership efforts that will ensure TPZ’s voice is centered in key local, state and national dialogues about the future of learning and workforce development.

The Vice President of Communications will establish and maintain TPZ’s brand standards and guide overall messaging and positioning.  They will assume primary responsibility for many of the  organization’s communications activities, including its digital (web, social media, etc.) and print communications, and media relations and outreach, working closely with TPZ’s executive team and staff.  They will also engage partner organizations and external stakeholders to develop messaging that advances TPZ’s thought leadership, philanthropic  and earned revenue opportunities.  They will supervise one direct report and will partner closely with a range of staff and leadership to ensure execution of defined priorities.

Ideal candidates for this position will understand nuances in communication to the public, nonprofit and for-profit sectors, have a passion for entrepreneurship and youth development and be adept both at clarifying and articulating communications strategy and in guiding and supporting implementation.  They will have  experience in written and digital communications, public affairs, event planning, and media relations. Success in this role will require a proactive leader and ‘doer’ that plans and moves projects forward, has high professional standards and attention to detail, and cares deeply about the organization’s mission to promote economic equity.


External Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership:

  • Develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to broaden  awareness of TPZ’s work and impact and strengthen TPZ’s brand identity across key stakeholder audiences
  • Partner with TPZ leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level  external audiences, including the media, public officials and key influencers
  • Work with the TPZ’s leadership team to recognize external communications challenges,  opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies in response

Thought Leadership:

  • Support thought leadership and related events to promote brand, mission, strategic priorities, and relationships with  key stakeholder audiences
  • Outreach and cultivate media / press opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations  and other supporting material, as needed
  • Facilitate media interactions for TPZ’s leadership team that helps positively promote and/or impact the  organization

Internal Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a high-quality internal organizational communications plan that ensures clear and consistent channels for sharing key information to support alignment of understanding and action across all levels of the organization
  • Play a critical role in integrating communications as a key culture-building lever at TPZ
  • Help to set norms of usage around a variety of communications channels amongst staff
  • Establish and support channels for ongoing, two-way feedback loops to ensure the best information is shared up, down and across the organization to support highest-quality work.
  • Work with the TPZ  leadership team to recognize internal communications challenges,  opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies in response

Communications Operations:

  • Oversee the continued development, promotion, and use of the TPZ brand
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, all copy intended for public consumption to ensure its alignment with the organization’s strategic priorities
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of all print and branded materials
  • Oversee, or execute as needed, the development of digital communications, including TPZ’s website, social medial , and newsletter, including content development, curation, and performance analytics
  • Coordinate webpage redesign and maintenance—ensure that new, updated, and consistent information are posted regularly and engages audience segments and leads to measurable action, specifically  curate content and increase audience engagement on TPZ’s social media channels
  • Coordinate and supervise communication contractors



While there is no perfect resume, we will likely be most interested in your application if you fulfill most or all of the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or an allied field; or 7+ years of experience  writing about education, entrepreneurship; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications (print, public speaking, and digital), including strategic planning for various media  channels, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and the most appropriate and effective  messages
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications skills, active listening skills and political acumen
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position  communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills
  • Demonstrable proof of cultivation and securement of prior key local and national media stories dealing with science, technology and arts, education and research; demonstrated history of working effectively with both national and local media
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships across a wide  variety of individuals and groups, both internally and externally
  • Ability to work under pressure to achieve tight deadlines while maintaining a customer service focus
  • Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to remain detail oriented in an environment in which change can  happen quickly
  • A demonstrable passion for the mission, vision, and values of The Possible Zone

COVID Vaccination Policy

The Possible Zone is requiring that all employees receive a primary series of COVID-19 vaccination as well as a booster dose. Being fully vaccinated means that an individual is at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen, and receives a booster dose when eligible. In order to be qualified for employment at The Possible Zone, final candidates must comply with the vaccination requirement or receive an approved exemption.
