Job Description

Gilead Sciences seeks an exceptional and inspirational communications executive to lead the organization’s US Public Affairs function, our largest and most prominent business in the world.  This role is responsible for setting and executing the US business’ public affairs strategy, including corporate reputation management, therapeutic area communications, and patient advocacy & community engagement plans across all Gilead’s current and future business in the United States.

This leader will work closely with Gilead’s US commercial and cross-functional leadership team and will serve as the strategic communications advisor and trusted business partner to this team.  A bold thinker who is actively involved in the business, this executive will lead a clear vision for how to shape understanding of Gilead’s mission, our innovative science and our engagement with community and patient advocacy groups to advance public health and eliminate health inequities in the US.

Reporting to the SVP Public Affairs, this role is based at Gilead’s headquarters in Foster City, CA, and will lead a team of communications and patient advocacy professionals.  The US VP Public Affairs is an integral member of both the US commercial and Global public affairs leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the US public affairs team responsible for the development and execution of the US market’s external communications strategy to drive the business objectives, product portfolio priorities and community & patient advocacy engagement, anticipating short-, medium- and long-term needs. Strategy components include: media, digital/omni-channel communications, reputation management, issue and crisis management, brand/franchise-level therapeutic area communications, community & patient advocacy engagement, and internal communications for the US commercial organization.
  • Drive the creation and implementation of an integrated external communications plan ensuring Gilead builds relationships with and delivers timely and accurate information to media (in partnership with corporate communications), patient advocacy organizations, and other relevant groups (e.g. trade associations) who influence the public discussion about our industry, therapeutic areas of focus and the general healthcare environment.
  • Shape Gilead’s reputation and brand through the customization of our global narrative for US-specific audiences and environment, delivering corporate and therapeutic area narratives across channels and audiences.  Align with and mobilize cross-functional leaders to tell the Gilead story in high-impact communication forums, communicating consistent messaging across policymakers, patient groups, physicians and payers.
  • Build out, lead and develop a dedicated, high-performing Public Affairs function for the U.S. business.  Create a vision and strategy for the function to meet evolving business needs, clearly defining objectives and priorities, improving efficiency and cross-functional business decision making.  Actively coach direct reports to become an industry-leading function with fit for future competencies in areas such as community engagement & advocacy, digital/social and therapy area communications.  Attract top talent and create an enriching and energizing work environment.
  • Inform priorities and collaborate on US-specific work with Global Public Affairs centers of expertise, including corporate communications, employee engagement, global community engagement & advocacy, global therapeutic area communications, corporate citizenship, and advancing health and black equity.
  • Cultivate relationships with key external stakeholders and represent the company’s positions and perspective for the US business.
  • In partnership with other PA sub functions, drive recognition of Gilead as an employer of choice through the cultivation and communication of Gilead’s efforts to progress diversity, equity and inclusion and reinforce a culture of agility and inclusiveness/representation.
  • Actively contribute to the internal communications and employee engagement strategy by proactively driving ideas and programs that support culture evolution and an engaged workforce.
  • Apply data and insights to drive key objectives and establish reputational KPIs across our public affairs programs.  Leverage data and social listening insights to advise and influence business and reputation decisions in real-time.
  • Establish and manage the US PA budget in a cost-effective manner.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 15 years healthcare public affairs leadership experience, preferably in pharmaceutical or biotech, with significant experience in the US market.
  • Proven ability to develop high-performing public affairs teams, individuals and leaders.
  • Demonstrated experience developing communications plans that drive business priorities.
  • Strong understanding of how the political and social landscape affects and shapes Gilead’s ability to achieve its communications and business objectives.  A passion for engaging in public health issues.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage complex and ambiguous projects, influence stakeholders without authority, effectively network across the organization and communicate with senior leaders all within a fast moving, challenging and dynamic commercial environment.
  • Ability to interact with academic experts, patients and patient advocates appropriately, with confidence, empathy and ease.
  • Expertise in media relations, corporate reputation, issues management and patient advocacy.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulations governing communications for a publicly traded biopharmaceutical company.
  • US specific experience required.
  • Prior experience in HIV and/or Oncology communications, advocacy, government affairs, marketing or medical affairs is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading a public affairs team/function
  • Specific knowledge of Oncology or HIV strongly preferred.
