Job Summary

The Vice President of Public Relations (VPPR) is a dynamic, results-driven public relations and communications specialist. The VPPR will work alongside senior leadership to develop and execute integrated external PR and communication strategies that align with organizational business strategies and goals. This role will be responsible for development and execution of strategic corporate communications plans that advance the MACU strategic business objectives, influence public opinion and enhance corporate reputation. This individual will assist on and be able to lead crisis communications and special situation projects. The VPPR will oversee media relations, have deep relationships with top tier business journalists and is able to leverage those relationships to pitch/secure coverage on behalf of the organization. This role will function in a team environment where management and junior staff work hand in hand to achieve outstanding results.

  • Provides ongoing leadership, innovation, thought leadership, training, and coaching, resulting in the creation of a vision and processes that will enhance the Public Relations team to meet business needs.

  • Studies the organization’s objectives, critical measures, promotional policies and needs to build strong public relations strategies that influence public opinion and promotes products, ideas, and services.

  • Reviews and understands MACU services and products and must be able to speak fluently to all services offered.

  • Makes strategic recommendations to Senior Leadership using organizational data and other research means and provides actionable recommendations that will help the credit union achieve its goals and implements change.

  • Accelerates execution, connectivity, and impact of initiatives. Works collaboratively with other team members and departments to connect dots and integrate initiatives as needed.

  • Builds and maintains relationships with relevant print, electronic and broadcast media in business, finance, technology, and mainstream news arena.

  • Provides strategic input and works with SVP Marketing/PR to create annual Public Relations Strategic Plan.

  • Works closely with key internal and external partners, including internal lines of business and external grantees, to align communication objectives.

  • Proactively manages all outreach and reactive media relations; and assumes responsibility for the development and execution of a media relations program.

  • Develops and maintains awareness of editorial calendars and reporters’ interests to actively place stories and anticipate emerging opportunities. Brainstorms new pitch ideas and angles to keep a steady flow of coverage outside of press releases.

  • Keeps a pulse on trending topics in the market and identify media opportunities for thought leadership.

  • Writes high level communications (e.g. press releases, bylines, op‐eds) and pitch them to the media.

  • Assists in the CEO communications to members, employees and other stakeholders.

  • Develops and manages joint media strategies with clients, strategic partners and industry influencers to increase awareness and recognition in the marketplace.

  • Crafts messaging and coordinates PR strategy across multiple channels (events, social, etc).

  • Communicates strategic vision internally and externally and help business development teams disperse the strategy to the greater organization and beyond.

  • Creates and maintains the appropriate metrics to evaluate impact and effectiveness of external communications.

  • Provides support on a variety of ongoing communication needs, including communications counsel, calendar development, briefing documents and talking points.

  • Prepares and staffs executives for media interviews and external stakeholder events.

  • Supports ad hoc communications assignments across communications and the communications team.

  • 10 years of experience driving innovative communications, public affairs and media relations strategies for corporations, government, campaigns, PR agencies or non-profits, with an emphasis on public relations.  Previous experience as news anchor, reporter, or editor preferred.

  • Five years progressive leadership experience leading small to medium size teams of employees.  Ability to recruit, engage and coach employee performance.


Bachelor’s degree in journalism, PR, communications, marketing, or related field.  Master’s in strategic communications preferred.

Managerial Responsibility

Has managerial responsibility for one or more key areas of the organization or division, typically with reporting managers and/or department heads. Works closely with top management to establish broad plans that contribute to development and implementation of policies that affect several functional areas. Determines goals to be reached and leads the achievement of goals. Recommends candidates for employment, conducts performance evaluations and salary reviews for assigned staff, and applies company policy/disciplinary action.

Computer/Office Equipment Skills

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Experience with analytical and reporting software preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly express ideas, methodology, results and recommendations verbally, in writing and through insightful reports and graphic illustrations.

  • Communicate complex ideas in a clear and persuasive manner. Anticipate other’s reaction to the message and adapt communication style to effectively influence a wide range of stakeholders at all organizational levels.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; sound judgment and strong collaborative decision-making skills combined.

  • Commitment to exemplifying the highest standards of integrity and professional excellence.

  • Track record of successfully developing and implementing a holistic media relations program for a wealth management, investment, asset management firm or similar firm in the financial services or financial technology spaces.

  • Network of top tier journalists and editors at relevant print, electronic and broadcast media outlets in business, finance, technology and the skill to proactively build new relationships.

  • Strategic thinker with experience managing reputational risk and advising on media strategy.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple high‐priority projects and challenges in deadline driven environment.

  • High degree of initiative, accountability, judgment and flexibility.

  • Understanding of complex financial products including alternative investments preferred.
