Position Description
• Leads efforts to identify and analyze state, local, and national policy, and regulation and legislation of concern to the American Cancer Society and its advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and the implications of any policy changes.
• Oversees research and analysis and produces all relevant materials to develop and support public policy initiatives, programs, legislation, and regulations related to the Society's mission objectives.
• Supervises a unit of Policy Team staff including making assignments, reviewing work products, and conducting performance evaluations. Responsible for day-to-day operations of the assigned staff and reports to the Senior Director of Policy.
• Convenes and leads work groups to develop, update, and review Society policy and ACS CAN advocacy position statements and materials in an area such as access to care or health science regulation, depending on background and experience.
• Provides direct support and technical assistance to Policy, State, Federal, and Grassroots staffs on public policy initiatives and analyses that will assist in achieving ACS CAN goals.
• Represents ACS CAN in meetings with outside partner organizations and government agency officials on major cross-cutting policy issues to further Society mission objectives and ACS CAN advocacy goals.
• Assists Senior Director, Policy in identifying emerging issues and developing and coordinating policy analysis and research strategies.
• Work with field staff and volunteers in identifying issues and interpreting policy.
• Represents ACS CAN at meetings with federal and state policy and legislative staff in order to educate staff about Society's policy priorities and their effects.
• Develops and maintains working relationship with various National Home Office (NHO in Atlanta) departments and serves as ACS CAN policy liaison to NHO to ensure consistency of policies. Interacts with policy, research, and advocacy organizations to ensure relevance of public policy information and help advance Society policy goals.
Position Requirements
Ph.D or master's degree in public or health policy or related fields, and a minimum of 8 years in a public policy position conducting health policy research and analysis
Strong quantitative and communication skills essential, as well as demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills. Ability to plan and lead complex projects in health policy with minimal supervision required. Experience in health coverage issues and/or science and regulatory policy highly desirable. Must have a great attitude, be a team player and a self-starter. Must be flexible and able to manage multiple tasks and projects.
