Position Overview

Director, Digital Strategy

The Director of Digital Strategy is responsible for creating and executing successful digital strategies to enhance AV’s reputation, brand, public policy, and advocacy goals. Based in Washington, D.C., and reporting to the VP of Communications, this individual collaborates with organizational leaders, managing online communications priorities and digital channel presence.

Operating in a fast-paced environment, the Director excels under pressure, engaging at the executive level. With a deep understanding of digital audiences, channels, and engagement strategies, they craft a long-term vision for AV’s digital channels, developing engaging content and optimizing strategies. The Director tracks digital trends, providing strategic insights and fostering collaboration across teams.


Core Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage AV’s digital presence, including social channels, website content, design, user experience, and SEO.
  • Create and execute effective paid and earned digital media strategies to educate and engage stakeholders.
  • Execute and manage campaigns across priorities, channels, consultants, and partners.
  • Manage a digital engagement budget for optimal results.
  • Work with AV’s operations team to handle digital threats and risks.
  • Analyze and recommend the use of new technologies and channels.
  • Develop key performance metrics for digital and social, reporting regularly on progress.
  • Grow an engaged follower base, cultivating relationships with influencers and entities in the digital space.
  • Develop and execute strategies for digital media engagement of AV employees and leaders.
  • Identify opportunities for cross-promotion and partnerships to amplify messaging.
  • Collaborate with Communications team, programmatic teams, external consultants, and freelancers for content development.
  • Identify opportunities for leveraging digital tools and content in response to trends and current events.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, media, marketing, political science, public policy, or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a digital communications professional, social media manager, journalist, or in related roles.
  • Successful track record in developing and executing digital media strategies.
  • Strong experience in educating, engaging, and mobilizing stakeholders on public policy and advocacy issues.
  • Strong ability to build a consistent online presence across digital channels.
  • Ability to be a valued consultant and coach to internal leaders.
  • Proven ability to analyze and recommend new digital engagement technologies.
  • Adept management of digital function, including consultants, budget, and metrics.
  • Ability to collaborate across multiple teams.
  • Experience using social media management tools.
  • Knowledge of graphic design, photography, web development, HTML/CSS, and content management systems.
