### Description
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) seeks to add a talented Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (VP of DEI) to its team. The Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion holds a pivotal role leading numerous initiatives within the ADEA Office of Access, Diversity, and Inclusion (ADI) portfolio, aimed at fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) throughout dental education, the oral health profession, and the academic health professions. Reporting directly to the Chief Diversity Officer, the VP of DEI collaborates closely with the ADEA senior leadership team to establish clear objectives and key performance indicators, aligning them with the ADEA Strategic Directives. These initiatives are designed to improve diversity, foster belonging, enhance well-being, and develop cultural competency among administrators, faculty, fellows, residents, and students within dental education programs. Moreover, the VP of DEI is dedicated to cultivating a nurturing environment that facilitates effective learning and supports the progression of all members within the dental education community.
Apart from overseeing the day-to-day operations of the ADEA Office of ADI, the VP of DEI plays a pivotal role as the primary point of contact for addressing both internal and external stakeholders’ concerns and developing effective solutions. They provide guidance to ADI staff, ensuring smooth operations and the timely execution of tasks. Additionally, the VP of DEI directly supervises three colleagues within the Office of ADI, namely the:
– Director of Cultural Engagement and Inclusive Analytics
– Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Learning
– Director of Inclusive Programs and Services/ADEA Deputy Director for SHPEP
Moreover, the VP of DEI is responsible for developing and executing diversity-focused programs and activities. They offer project support to ADI team members, ensuring the creation of high-quality programming in various areas including DEIBJ, health equity, and cultural/structural competence. Additionally, they spearhead efforts to recruit and retain individuals from underrepresented groups within dental education and the academic health professions.
Finally, the VP of DEI collaborates closely with both the ADEA Corporate Relations team to secure external funding for DEIBJ initiatives and the ADEA Communications and Marketing team to develop DEIBJ marketing materials and branded pieces. Additionally, they may take the lead on special projects, deliver presentations on DEIBJ topics, and/or serve as the representative of ADEA at meetings with external stakeholders and organizations, as directed by the ADEA Chief Diversity Officer or President & CEO.
### Primary Responsibilities
– Manages the day-to-day operations of the ADEA Office of Access, Diversity, and Inclusion.
– Directly supervises the Director of Cultural Engagement and Inclusive Analytics, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive Learning, and Director of Inclusive Programs and Services/ADEA Deputy Director for SHPEP.
– Provides oversight support of the Senior Director for ADI/Staff Liaison to the ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows to provide guidance. This includes guiding programmatic activities and collaborating with ADEA Chapter leaders to develop initiatives that support students, residents, and fellows interested in academic dentistry and oral health research careers.
– Supports the development and writing of grant proposals to secure external funding for DEIBJ programs, provides effective budgetary grant management, and establishes compliance protocols, policies, processes, and reporting for grants within the ADEA ADI portfolio in collaboration with the ADEA Finance and Grants Administration team.
– Provides program support for the ADEA Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) Principal Investigator and the ADEA SHPEP Deputy Director for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation SHPEP grant as needed. Ensures SHPEP grant budgetary compliance and reporting for submission to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
– Develops and supports ADEA activities and initiatives to promote and implement DEIBJ, health equity, well-being, cultural/structural competency, cultural sensitivity, and inclusive excellence in academic dentistry and the oral health professions.
– Serves as the primary point of contact for daily inquiries regarding ADI operations and activities from internal and external stakeholders, providing effective solutions.
– Stays informed about national and global diversity and inclusion issues and best practices for improving access, diversity, and inclusion in higher education and healthcare, particularly in dentistry and allied dental education.
– Develops networks and collaborates with professional dental associations, government agencies, foundations, and ADEA staff to cultivate funding sources to support ADEA diversity, equity, and inclusion programming.
– Develops resources, programming, and initiatives to promote leadership development among historically underrepresented and marginalized groups in dental education and the academic health professions.
– Supports efforts internally and externally to enhance recruitment and retention of men of color in dental education, the oral health workforce, and the academic health professions.
– Manages and leads special projects assigned by the Chief Diversity Officer, such as the ADEA Climate Study, faculty recruitment and retention resources/training, and health equity initiatives.
– Writes, researches, and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to develop briefs, policy studies, Association articles, and other documents to advance health equity, cultural competency, equity, inclusion, and diversity in U.S. and Canadian dental education and health professions.
– Monitors laws and regulations related to FERPA, HIPAA, Title IX, Title VII, Title VI, and other related equal opportunity, human rights, and civil rights laws for related implications in dental education.
– Provides guidance and subject matter expertise to the: ADEA Diversity Officers, ADEA Women Liaison Officers, ADEA Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee, ADEA Collaborative on Dental Education Climate Assessment, ADEA Women in Leadership Section, ADEA Promoting Respect for Identity Dignity and Expression (PRIDE) Section, ADEA Minority Affairs, Diversity and Inclusion Section, and external groups supporting DEIB and health equity in oral health education, the academic health professions, and in healthcare in general.
– Provides support to the ADI team project lead for the ADEA Enid A. Neidle Scholar-in Residence Program selection process. Assists in mentoring Neidle Scholars and develops leadership and networking opportunities for their professional growth. Additionally, assists the Neidle Scholars with research project development and expanding professional networks.
– Promotes the use of ADEA resources to help meet the Commission on Dental Accreditation Standards related to fostering diversity and a humanistic environment.
– Performs other duties as assigned.
### Qualifications
– A graduate degree plus 9 years of progressive relevant experience with substantive experience at the senior director or equivalent level in social justice or DEIBJ programming and implementation within higher education institutions, healthcare, or health professions settings.
– Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in higher education, social justice, the health professions, or a related field with a minimum of 11 years of progressive relevant experience with substantive experience at the senior director or equivalent level in social justice or DEIBJ programming and implementation within higher education institutions, healthcare, or health professions settings.
– Previous experience in a leadership role directly related to diversity, equity, inclusion, health equity, and social justice is essential.
– Substantial supervisory experience, including a minimum of 3 years of direct supervision, is required. Experience supervising multiple reports is strongly preferred.
– Successful grant writing and development experience is preferred.
– Extensive experience collaborating with faculty, staff, and students in academic or healthcare settings to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice.
– Ability to conduct research as well as identify and implement research best practices of diversity and inclusion.
– Previous project management experience with a proven track record of accomplishment in creating, delivering, and managing organization wide diversity and inclusion, equity and cultural competency training programs and resources.
– Knowledge of Title IX/Clery, FERPA, ADA, Title VII, Title VI, Section 504, and related regulations, and the ability to interpret and apply them within dental education and the other health professions is strongly preferred.
– Demonstrates discretion, sound judgment, diplomacy, and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
– Effective problem-solving skills, including the ability to anticipate, assess, gather pertinent information, and develop solution-focused recommendations to address problems and critical issues.
– Demonstrated understanding of current and historical issues related to diversity, equity, compliance, inclusion and inclusive excellence in higher education and healthcare environments.
– A team-oriented individual with the capacity to lead, motivate and coach a high-performing team, fostering effective collaboration.
– Proven ability to establish productive partnerships with community members, organizations, and other entities.
– Excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills with experience in utilizing social media for communications.
– Proficient in public speaking and delivering presentations.
– Expertise with Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and videoconference/meeting software such as Zoom/Teams. Ability to learn new technologies as needed.
– Ability to work successfully in a diverse team environment and collaborate effectively with others.
– Approximately 20-30% of overnight air travel and occasional weekend commitments are expected.
– Ability to work at ADEA’s DC office on a hybrid basis three days per week and as needed.
