The Public Policy Coordinator

The Public Policy Coordinator coordinates the work of the entire Public Policy department, manages compliance, tracks policy trends, and monitors state and federal legislation.

Background

Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a nonpartisan educational and advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the constitutional principle of church-state separation as the only way to ensure freedom of religion, including the right to believe or not believe, for all of us. Founded in 1947, Americans United is a diverse and dynamic organization composed of people from all walks of life: lawyers and lobbyists, students and activists, religious leaders and impassioned Americans. AU includes people of faith and people who don’t profess any particular faith. It is a community that welcomes people of all genders, races, ethnicities, religions or beliefs, sexual orientations, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities. Because we work on a wide variety of issues with many different communities, we value what diversity and diverse perspectives bring to our work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Track, monitor, and analyze legislation and regulations on the federal and state levels using bill tracking software. Identify legislation relevant to AU, provide initial analysis, and determine whether to elevate it to the Public Policy department.
  • Track and monitor policy trends in social and traditional media, using judgment to research and document notable trends as appropriate.
  • Draft and edit various advocacy materials, including reports, blog posts, talking points, and other advocacy content.
  • Conduct research on specific legislative and other policy issues.
  • Coordinate special projects within the Public Policy department, including its intern program.
  • Use judgment to ensure AU is in compliance with lobby registration, filings, and reports.
  • Coordinate and participate in coalition activities.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of legal, legislative, or other policy experience.
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, writing, research, and speaking skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions regarding job responsibilities, including legislative tracking and lobbyist filings.
  • Ability to collaborate productively with stakeholders of differing viewpoints, work across diverse communities (e.g., race, age, class, LGBTQ+, religious/nonreligious), and integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into the work.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously while prioritizing the most important ones.
  • Possess project management skills to maintain job responsibilities for self and department, seeing large projects through to completion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated interest in progressive advocacy, civil rights, civil liberties, and/or church-state separation.
