American Action Forum Seeks Director of Health Care Policy

This position is responsible for AAF’s very active health policy portfolio and requires the ability to research and communicate effectively about a wide swath of health policy issues. This includes a firm grasp of the key policy issues facing major federal health programs; health insurance generally; drug pricing; public health; medical innovations and relevant FDA policy; and other issues that arise in key legislative and regulatory initiatives. This role requires strong writing skills and the ability to effectively manage a small team of analysts. Directors must be able to quickly locate details, produce research on deadline, and work collaboratively with communications and other issue area directors and staff. Good candidates will demonstrate a proactive ability to assess legislative and regulatory priorities as well as a commitment to free market-oriented policy solutions. Ideal candidates will be able to use data to critique and creatively develop policy proposals. This is an in-office position in Washington, DC.

This role is also responsible for developing and maintaining relationships in the health care policy field that will help advance AAF’s mission of publishing relevant, useful research for policymakers and affiliated audiences. Key audiences and contacts include the relevant legislative committees, agencies, industry groups, and press.

The health care policy program at AAF also includes microsimulation modeling capabilities that require upkeep and administrative management by the Director.

Directors report to the Chief Operating Officer.

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Three or more years working in this policy field on Capitol Hill, a relevant agency, think tank, or commensurate experience
  • A graduate degree in healthcare policy, public policy, or communications; or commensurate experience
  • Strong writing, research, and data analysis skills
  • A firm grasp of health care policy
  • Experience working with staffers and elected officials at the state and Federal level
  • Ability to multi-task and shift priorities with little notice
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • An interest in management of a small policy team
  • Ability to communicate complex policy and its implications to a variety of audiences and stakeholders

Responsibilities and Duties

  • This position is responsible for all of AAF’s health policy products and must be proactive about pursuing research, producing original analysis, and locating useful data sources
  • This position requires the ability to investigate a wide swath of relevant policy questions in order to succinctly explain key policy issues
  • This position must manage and mentor health policy analysts

Benefits/Salary

  • Salary commensurate with experience, anticipated range: $110,000-$150,000
