Purpose of the Position

The Director, US Government Affairs, will be responsible for managing a range of government relations initiatives to promote the business and policy objectives of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) in each of CPKC’s network states. This includes a focus on the following states: Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Maine, as well as the City of Kansas City, MO metro area.

Under the supervision of the AVP, US Government Affairs, the successful candidate will work closely with the Government Affairs, Communications, and Media Relations teams, and others across the company, to execute the initiatives of CPKC’s government affairs program.

Position Accountabilities

  • Develop, maintain, and grow strong relationships with key elected officials, political staff, and government officials to tell the inspiring story of CPKC as the first single-line transnational railway in North America.
  • Develop and execute government relations and advocacy strategies.
  • Write strong, concise, and clear briefing notes.
  • Collaborate horizontally across the company to prepare written submissions and presentations to government and parliamentary committees on policy matters affecting the rail transportation sector.
  • Deploy fact-based and data-driven arguments to educate key stakeholders, establishing CPKC as the credible industry leader on railway-related public policy issues.
  • Attend and represent CPKC at government, political, and other external stakeholder meetings and events.
  • Engage as a strong team player and leader, both internally and externally.
  • Monitor, analyze, and respond to current and potential policy and legislative or regulatory actions affecting the railway industry and CPKC.
  • Identify risks and opportunities.
  • Troubleshoot, address, and mitigate stakeholder issues.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned, consistent with organizational goals.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, political science, or a related field.
  • 5-7+ years of professional experience in government or a government relations role, preferably in the transportation industry, within one or multiple covered states.
  • Deep knowledge of US state governments and policymaking processes.
  • Strong understanding of federal and state PAC management and contribution processes.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to use data tools to quantify and illustrate arguments (e.g., economic impacts).
  • Bilingual proficiency in English/French or English/Spanish is an asset.

The successful candidate must complete the following clearances:

  • Criminal history check.
  • Reference check.
  • Driver’s license verification and/or the last three years of driving history if required by the position.

Management Conductor Program

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the best way for management employees to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain or maintain certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
