Agenda

9:00 a.m. The Essence of Leadership: What Effective Leaders Do That’s Different

Many people see barriers and work to overcome them. Leaders don’t focus on barriers; they focus on the success that’s to come down the road and how, if they can find a way to that success, the barriers will eliminate themselves. In our first session, we’ll learn how to adopt that kind of thinking: taking the longer view, motivating people towards what can be achieved, rather than what must be fixed, and articulating that opportunity in a convincing way. We’ll look at:

  • Common traits of respected and effective leaders, regardless of their field
  • The importance of and way to articulate a vision
  • The ability to clarify the core opportunity and/or challenge, and put those opportunities and threats in motivational perspective

10:15 a.m. Leading People and Teams: Motivating, Inspiring and Setting Up People for Success

You’ve found inspiration in others: bosses, civic activists, sports figures and more. Now direct reports and teams are looking to be inspired by you. How do you take your experience in being motivated and reorient it to motivate others? We’ll codify, in concrete ways and with concrete tools, how to make that switch:

  • Identifying the strengths of your team and team members, and the challenges they face, and creating opportunities for them to excel and improve
  • Learning what leadership style works best for your team as a whole and the individuals on it
  • Communicating in a way that inspires people’s best effort and work
  • Acknowledging team members in a way that matters

11:30 a.m. Translating Leadership Lessons to Public Affairs: Unique Opportunities and Challenges

With a new or improved grounding in leadership thinking, strategy and tactics, we’ll talk about applying those learnings to public affairs. We’ll talk about general operating principles that apply to public affairs regardless of industry or organization, and focus on three situations that all public affairs professionals face and require leadership finesse:

  • Being seen and treated as a proactive, strategic advisor to business and being asked for advice, rather than only looking for opportunities to give it
  • Communicating the work of public affairs in a strategic versus tactical way, with an emphasis on the relationship between your function’s work and organization’s strategic plan
  • Generating support for public affairs from other parts of your organization, especially those that are traditionally skeptical
