CFR’s Global Communications and Media Relations team promotes CFR and Foreign Affairs content, activities, and experts through media outreach.
Foreign Affairs is hiring an associate director (or deputy director, depending on experience) to lead media relations efforts for Foreign Affairs magazine and its website, ForeignAffairs.com. The role, based at CFR’s headquarters in New York City, will work closely with the media relations coordinator and reports to the vice president, Global Communications and Media Relations. The position is hybrid.
Major Responsibilities
- Develop and implement media strategies for Foreign Affairs print and online content.
- Write and edit news releases, press notes, media advisories, and other promotional materials.
- Maintain project management process and calendar for releases and other outreach opportunities.
- Proactively pitch Foreign Affairs content, authors, and editors to various media channels, aggregators, and newsletters.
- Attend Foreign Affairs editorial and marketing meetings, briefing the CFR communications team and marketing leads.
- Execute targeted press campaigns for print and web-only content across domestic and international media, including broadcast, print, podcasts, newsletters, and events.
- Manage Foreign Affairs email blasts to media and CFR members using Sailthru ESP templates.
- Use media and web analytics to track and report impact and results across print, broadcast, and newsletters. Aim to increase media referrals and inbound links to the website.
- Expand the quality and scope of national and international media lists.
- Coordinate marketing strategy meetings for each magazine issue.
- Serve as liaison between the magazine and CFR to foster cross-promotion across CFR channels, including newsletters and social media.
- Collaborate with Foreign Affairs business and editorial teams to build external outreach campaigns that advance the magazine’s priorities.
- Establish and maintain relationships with external authors and their institutional communications teams to enhance earned media opportunities.
- Leverage the profile and reach of Foreign Affairs authors and editorial staff by arranging interviews, briefings, and other press opportunities.
- Manage media at on-the-record Foreign Affairs LIVE events, as well as issue launch events at CFR.
- Send weekly reports of high-impact media mentions to the Foreign Affairs editorial and business teams.
- Monitor and update the Foreign Affairs subscription comp list to support new media relationships and meet communications goals.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of experience in media relations.
- Excellent writing skills, with extensive experience in news releases and copy editing.
- Knowledge of and interest in current U.S. foreign policy and international affairs.
- Strong communication and consensus-building skills.
- Proven track record in working with external partners and stakeholders on fast-moving, multifaceted media campaigns.
- Working knowledge of international issues and media landscape.
- Degree in Communications, International Affairs, or related field.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, CRM, Sailthru, Trendkite, Muckrack/Cision, and database management.
- Preferred: Existing relationships with top-tier U.S. and international media.
- Proactive, organized, and able to function in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Willingness to work flexible hours when necessary.
Pay Range
- Associate Director: $70,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience.
- Deputy Director: $85,000 to $100,000 per year, depending on experience.
- Pay commensurate with experience and education.
