Overview

The Johns Hopkins Institute for Planetary Health (JHIPH) is seeking a skilled Communications Officer to lead a comprehensive strategy promoting the Institute’s research, practice, and educational initiatives. This role includes collaboration with the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA) to engage partners globally. The successful candidate will report to the Institute’s Executive Director and work in a hybrid role across two locations: Baltimore, Maryland, and Washington, DC.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, refine, and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for JHIPH.
  • Establish the brand of the Institute and promote educational, research, and practice elements through various channels.
  • Support PHA’s global narrative shift strategy regarding the Earth crisis.
  • Create original content across channels: articles, news releases, social media posts, newsletters, etc.
  • Manage media relations, including outreach, responding to inquiries, and coordinating opportunities.
  • Collaborate with faculty and collaborators to mainstream research for impact.
  • Write, design, and produce reports, news releases, infographics, and other materials.
  • Refine op-eds, talking points, media pitches, and other communication materials.
  • Promote and disseminate Institute reports and publications.
  • Develop and manage the communications budget.
  • Lead communications strategy for internal and external events.
  • Measure results and report on the impact of communication strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
  • Five years of related experience.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, per JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Communications or related field.
  • Experience in environmental or climate change policy or advocacy.
  • Strong interest in advancing equity, evidence, and policy.
  • International experience or collaboration.
  • Experience managing high-profile communications with donors.
  • Experience managing contracts and deliverables from vendors.

Starting Salary Range: Min $72,600 – Max $127,000 Annually (Commensurate with experience)
