Position Summary

Reporting directly to the Senior Director, Climate Strategy, the Director of Offshore Wind will lead the organization, working collaboratively with the Climate team to meet the goals of the Climate Strategy of the Flight Plan. The role focuses on facilitating the rapid deployment of gigawatts (GW) of well-sited and operated offshore wind that benefits climate, communities, and conservation.

The Director will:

  • Represent Audubon’s science, conservation, and coastal and marine expertise in advocacy for federal and state planning processes.
  • Address permitting under federal laws protecting birds.
  • Collaborate on selected priority projects with industry, federal and state agencies, eNGO partners, frontline community organizations, and the Audubon Network.

They will also:

  • Engage external audiences and funders.
  • Provide technical advice to local and regional offices.
  • Advocate for science-based conservation and offshore wind research.

Compensation

Salary ranges based on geographic location:

  • National: $90,000–$101,000/year
  • Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY: $101,000–$113,000/year
  • NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle: $112,000–$126,000/year

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate internally with Audubon’s climate and energy team, coastal programs, federal/state policy leads, and communications teams to achieve the Flight Plan milestone of 100GW of well-sited and operated renewables within four years.
  • Work externally with industry, federal and state agencies, research institutions, and partners to promote efficient planning, siting, and permitting of offshore wind that:
    • Avoids, minimizes, mitigates, and monitors adverse impacts on marine and coastal habitats.
    • Minimizes negative impacts on other ocean uses.
    • Consults robustly with Native American tribes and communities.
    • Engages state/local governments and stakeholders meaningfully from the outset.
    • Avoids negative impacts and provides benefits to underserved communities.
    • Uses the best available scientific and technological data.
  • Identify and support coordination opportunities at national and state levels.
  • Represent Audubon in coalitions for state and local NCS offshore wind policy.
  • Liaise with national and state staff to prioritize and support positive policy opportunities.
  • Partner with the Senior Director and Development team to support fundraising.
  • Collaborate with Audubon’s communications team to effectively share Audubon’s offshore wind role.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative analysis to support policy interventions.
  • Promote organizational culture fostering cooperation, communication, and respect.
  • Incorporate equity, diversity, inclusion, and justice principles in all climate strategy work.
  • Engage in personal development for advocacy and communications skills.
  • Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas to plan and execute shared priorities.
  • Perform other job-related duties to advance NAS’s climate strategy and goals.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in public policy advocacy, communications, federal ocean policy, or related fields; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in government relations, advocacy, public relations, or public service.
  • Knowledge of climate change impacts and renewable energy policies preferred.
  • Exceptional project management skills.
  • Proven ability to build and activate diverse coalitions.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS tools like ArcGIS Online.

  • Physical ability to lift up to 35 lbs and traverse up to 5 miles on the beach carrying equipment (with or without accommodations).
