Job Summary
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is seeking to hire a Director of Public Relations and Communications to work across the ANA Enterprise and lead a team of public relations specialists. As PR Director, you will oversee the strategy, development, execution, and evaluation of integrated public relations and executive communications strategies for the organization.
In this role, you will focus on effectively communicating the brand, vision, and strategic objectives among a wide range of internal and external audiences, translating policy, issues, and programmatic work into communications and media opportunities for the ANA Enterprise.

What You Will Do
- Directs integrated efforts to achieve strategic objectives and effectively position the organization as a leading voice and top resource on nurses, the nursing profession, and health care.
- Oversees executive communications to bolster thought-leadership visibility.
- Leads environmental scanning and rapid response efforts on external issues and events.
- Owns the organization’s crisis communication strategy and its implementation.
- Cultivates relationships with mainstream media in major print, broadcast, and online outlets.
- Oversees message development and media training for key stakeholders.
- Leads the development and execution of multimedia strategies, including video, PSAs, media relations, social media, and executive communications, to reach nurses and key audiences.
- Develops communications strategies to support ANA’s constituent and state nurses’ associations, fostering collaboration on content, messaging, and best practices.
- Ensures materials and content convey key messages and meet quality standards while addressing stakeholder needs.
- Develops and leads the organization’s executive communications program, including a thought leadership program for the Enterprise.
What You Bring to ANA
- Education:
Undergraduate degree from a 4-year institution (in advertising, marketing, or communications preferred); master’s degree preferred. - Experience:
Minimum of 12 years in public relations or corporate communications (15+ preferred), with at least 5 years managing a team.
Record of proven accomplishments in public relations and communications within a complex organization. - Skills & Competencies:
Exceptional communication skills, including listening, written and verbal communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Innovative thinker with a record of translating ideas into action plans.
Advanced group facilitation and public speaking skills.
Politically astute with excellent judgment.
Ability to prioritize and execute complex tasks under deadline.
Skilled collaborator in politically sensitive, high-visibility work environments.
Strong human relations skills, with the ability to motivate and coach staff.
Superior media and public relations skills, with experience integrating digital and social media into campaigns.
Ability to recognize and appreciate cultural differences.
Strong work ethic, positive attitude, and the ability to perform under deadline stress.
Flexibility and diplomacy in managing changing priorities and workloads.
