Summary

The Director, State Policy position is responsible for creating and implementing successful strategies to achieve the organization’s goals on policy issues impacting the broadcast industry.


Essential Functions

  • Under the direction of the EVP, Government Relations, develop state and local advocacy strategies to address issues impacting the broadcast industry.
  • Monitor emerging state issues and advise the Government Relations team on potential impacts on broadcast members.
  • Develop state and local advocacy materials, including letters, testimony, and one-pagers in support of the association’s policy goals.
  • Work with members of the advocacy team to execute tactics that influence state and local legislation impacting local broadcasters.
  • Coordinate state and local political engagement, working closely with the SVP of State Associations.
  • Grow and maintain a network of relationships with state legislators and staff, along with state association executives.
  • Organize and conduct successful advocacy efforts in conjunction with the NAB Government Relations Department and the 50 state broadcast associations, including writing emails, drafting issue sheets, and editing materials related to NAB’s advocacy efforts.
  • Consistently manage external legislative tracking.
  • Attend state broadcast association conventions as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Four-year degree and 7+ years of advocacy or related experience.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal skills when interfacing with members.
  • Proven ability to represent the organization in a non-partisan manner.
  • Thorough knowledge of the legislative process.
  • Ability to conduct research and in-depth analysis of complex issues related to the organization.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 20% of the time.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Demonstrated work experience with state and local government.
  • Demonstrated understanding of top issues for broadcasters.

Work Location and Schedule

This position is eligible for NAB’s Hybrid Work Schedule, which includes three days (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) in the D.C. office each week.
