The International Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ICNL) is looking for a creative and motivated lawyer to help us do just that.
ICNL promotes democratic freedoms, specifically the freedoms of association, expression, and assembly around the world. Our work in Latin America and the Caribbean supports civil society, digital rights, philanthropy, and democracy.
The Legal Associate is a full-time position based in our Washington, DC office. The job is dynamic, fast-paced, and best suited to someone creative, flexible, and comfortable with multi-tasking. Occasional travel to the region may be required.
The Legal Associate will assist ICNL’s Latin America and Caribbean Team to implement regional and country programming to protect the freedoms of association, expression, and assembly by:
- Drafting legal analyses, briefers, infographics, and other written materials for use by government officials, parliamentarians, civil society, and the media
- Developing and implementing grant programs to support partners’ law reform efforts
- Designing trainings and initiatives to strengthen knowledge of laws affecting the freedoms of association, expression, and assembly
- Researching cutting-edge legal issues, such as the nexus between climate change and civic freedoms or the exercise of civic freedoms in the digital age
- Implementing program development initiatives
Qualifications and Requirements
- Law degree from an accredited school
- Excellent research, writing, and presentation skills
- Professional competency in English and Spanish is required (proficiency in Portuguese is an advantage)
- At least two years of professional legal experience preferred
- Experience working with civil society, government, or an international organization is an advantage
- Experience with freedom of expression, freedom of peaceful assembly, or internet freedom issues is an advantage
The Legal Associate must possess legal authorization to work in the US.
Salary and Benefits
The projected salary range for this position is $103,529 to $119,059. It is not typical for offers to be made at or near the top of the range. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, and education. ICNL provides health insurance benefits.
